guys trip for a Bucs game - stay in estshore or downtown...

Hey there,

Coming down with 8 or 10 guys for the Bucs vs Chargers game in mid Nov as part of our annual Stadium Tour where we visit a different NFL venue each year.

I'm really indecisive about staying closer to downtown, or closer to the airport/stadium/Westshore area.

We are all about 30, like to enjoy some nightlife all three nights, and some good restaurants as well. We def want to hit Ybor one night and we're not sure of the others. We are probably golfing on Saturday.

If I stay downtown, I don't mind taking transportation to/from the game but aside from Ybor and some downtown bars, would it be good for us? Westshore seems quite developed from what I can tell, but I don't want to feel like I'm in an airport hotel or in a business district. We might also hit the Seminole Hardrock Casino one night unless someone tells me it's lame...

Also, if we stay in Westshore, I guess we have the option (not sure if we'd do it) of hitting up St Petes / Clearwater as I hear there is a decent nightlife scene.

Westshore Hotels seems to be more plentiful and cheaper overall. Plus it would be convenient to be by the airport and stadium but I dont want to feel trapped at my hotel, like I cant walk to a local watering hole.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks so much and as you can tell, I'm going back and forth!

KC,

You have done your research well. Beyond what you have discovered on your own there is nothing much to add. Now YOU guys have to decide what is best for you.

Either downtown or Westsghore areas will require you to take a cab to the Seminole Hardrock Casino. Most do not think it is lame. If you are not a smoker be prepared for thick clouds of tobacco smoke. It is one of the few places smoking is allowed indoors in the area.

Hope you all have a great time.

Are you renting a car? If so, either is totally fine. There is not much to do downtown, per se, but the pro is it is close to the trolley that can take you to Channelside or Ybor City for nightlife. It's also a very short cab ride to SOHO/South Howard area where there are many bars and restaurants. It's also slightly closer to Seminole Hard Rock.

I'm currently 9 months pregnant, so have not been on the bar scene in awhile, but MacDinton's on Howard Ave. was always very crowded on Friday nights for Happy Hour. There are several other bars/restaurants within close walking distance.

I would cab it at night no matter which area you decide on unless you have a DD. Have fun!

I would lean towards staying in or near Ybor/downtown/Channelside. If you stay downtown, you would be able to walk to places, and even hop on the trolley, or a very short cab ride to Ybor for all the nightlife. Great Tampa culture there in Ybor. Enjoy some Cuban food at the Columbia Restaurant. Visit some of the Ybor cigar shops, not to mention all the fun nightlife and other great restaurants there.

Ybor is really only maybe an extra 10-15 minute drive to the stadium from Westshore, or would only add the same time to the drive to Clearwater Beach.

Westshore is nice, but seems so generic, it could be 'anycity USA'.

Sounds like you have done some good research, but in my opinion, all that Ybor has to offer, outweighs just being a little closer to the stadium and airport.

Either way, sounds like a good trip. Hope ya'll have a fun time !

From my limited experience, the west shore area is not the place for nightlife. Stay closer to downtown so you are closer to ybor, channel side, mcdintons, and the hard rock

BTW, There is a very nice Hampton Inn right in Ybor City. Easy walk to all the Ybor entertainment, restaurants, and club from it. And an easy stumble back to it.
