Treasure Island or Clearwater Beach

My wife and I are planning a trip to Fl 5/27 - 5/30. We are flying into Tampa. I am trying to decide where to stay. We are looking for a romantic weekend and price isn't really an issue for lodging. What are some of the best places to stay, eat and visit?

We have never been to the area before and greatly appreciate the advice.

Thanks. I am leaning towards Clearwater. Shepard's Beach Resort looks like it has a lot of entertainment.

Shephards Resort is kind of the party spot on Clearwater Beach. They have a very active beach, pool, and tiki bar area. Live music, and some busy parties. Popular with the younger-ish 20-30 crowd. Locals will boat up to join the fun. Not that that is good or bad, just not for everyone, so I thought I would mention it.

An alternative to Shephards on South Beach, if you want, is the Holiday Inn on Gulfview Blvd. A little closer to the main beach, and easy walk to Shephards if wanting to visit, but retreat to a more quieter place.

Mid-Beach area - The Hilton, which is directly on the main beach. Or, the new/upscale Hyatt Aqualea, which is just accross the street from, but still overlooking the beach.

The little quieter, slower, less crowded North Beach area - Sandpearl Resort. Directly on the beach, newer, upscale.

From any, walk to a great variety of restaurants, beach bars, shops, and activities.

Tampa, to Clearwater beach, about 30-35 minute drive.

TW,

Treasure Island is a lot more laid back than Clearwater Beach, The sunsets on the beach are as breathtaking as anywhere on the Gulf Coast, maybe smaller crowds than Clearwater Beach.

Saint Pete Beach is also a nice option for a romantic weekend. You mentioned that price is not an object, in that case, the Don Cesar could be a great choice for its location, upscale amenities and romantic ambiance. Passe-a-Grille directly to the south of it has a small town atmosphere with nice bars and restaurants, scenic views (bay and gulf) wherever you turn, charming - not hectic.

Clearwater Beach is also very crowded. Clearwater Beach has a bit more nightlife, more restaurants, etc. Treasure Island is more laid back, beautiful beach, great bars and restaurants. It has a beach town feel. It all depends on what you are looking to do.

Me and my family went to Clearwater beach this past summer and LOVED it. I didn't really think it was overcrowded. I have only Myrtle Beach, SC to compare it to, but it wasn't that bad at all to me. This was our first Fl vacation and are planning another this year maybe in the Destin area. I don't think anyone could go wrong with Clearwater or anywhere in that near area.

i too would rec St Pete Beach for your profile (ie romatic weekend). CW is great fun, but has a young demographic and is very crowded and busy.

Thank you for all the great recommendations. I think we may be leaning towards St Pete now. We are looking for something laid back. Beach bars and dining with outdoor seating on the beach. Any recommendations for a nice oceanfront place to stay in the St Pete area?

Hi Tom,

Take a look at the Don CeSar. It is a lovely hotel, elegant and romantic but not stuffy, on a quiet stretch of beach. They do have a beach bar. Outdoor dining overlooking the beach is available at the Sea Porch Cafe (excellent food and service).

The only thing about the Don is that it IS set away from everything else, but this may be a plus to you. It is not near other hotels, restaurants, beach bars, etc. It would be a long-ish walk (20-30 minutes along the beach, or short drive) to visit other places.

If you wish to be more in the thick of things, have a look at the Tradewinds properties, the Sirata Resort, Grand Plaza and the Beachcomber. These all have beach bars and outdoor dining, but they will be busier, with more families about.
