How do we get from West Palm Beach Airport to Port Everglade

Need the locals or past cruisers help! Will be flying into West Palm Beach Airport in Nov. for a cruise out of Port Everglades. There are2 of us. We need a hotel for the night before the cruise and a way to get to the port for the cruise. After the cruise, we plan to stay 2 nites to relax even more. Would like advice on how to get to hotels, to port from hotel and where to stay. I know thats a lot but please help with any of it you can. Are there shuttles from airport to hotels? What is to do in West Palm Beach the 2days post? Should we stay in Ft Lauderdale instead? Thanks a lot!

Last question first: If I were you, I'd stay in Ft. Lauderdale both pre and post-cruise. Since the West Palm Airport is about 50 miles north of Port Everglades, van or limousine service would be Very expensive to the Port, and I don't know of any feasible public transportation that would get you close enough to the Port to make it worth pursuing. Instead, I'd rent a car for pick-up at arrival at West Palm airport, drive to a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale (decide how much you want to spend and what location you want to be in, if you have a preference), then search for hotels in and around the area - there are plenty. Depending on how much free time you'll have that day and what interests you, you'll have a car to explore. Day of cruise, drop off the car at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, then take one of the shuttles available there to the Port (I think all cruiselines provide shuttle service - check with your particular one for when they run and where they pick up) . If you prefer to take a taxi vs. a shuttle to the Port, they're readily available and cost is reasonable, since the Port is so close to the airport. Post-cruise stay: I like the old downtown area of Ft. Lauderdale, i.e., around Las Olas Blvd. Lots of restaurant choices, boutiques, and close to the beach. The historic Riverside Hotel is charming but have heard that the rooms in the new section are far better than the original section, so if you stay there, ask for a room in the new section. I've also stayed at the Doubletree - basic rooms but good location - close to beach and Las Olas. If you're looking for something with a little more "action", you might consider the infamous (read: Anna Nicole Smith) Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, which is 6-7 miles from the Port and Airport - not too far if you have a car. If you're trying to get the biggest bang for your buck, don't forget to check out the make-an-offer sites, Priceline and Hotwire, for good hotel deals; you won't be able to specify a particular hotel, but you'll be able to control your spending by your choice of hotel categories, i.e., basic to luxury. Also, use this site (tripadvisor) to check hotel availability for your dates, as well as a comparison of rates between expedia, travelocity and more. Hope this was helpful and that you have a great cruise and stay in S. FL!

Thankyou for your well thought out answer Lauran26. I did get a qote from a shuttle service and it was $150 for one way from WPB to the port. ugh! I am really considering taking the train, I have never rode a real train and it might be interesting and its certainly cheap and doesn't look like it takes too long.

But I will keep the car rental in mind, will for sure rent on return. Thanks again.

Hi again superrn 98,

Yes, the train is an option but one I didn't mention because I didn't consider it "feasible" . Why? Because if you stay in West Palm, you still have to get TO the train station (will your hotel provide free transportation - doubt it - or will you have to take a taxi? $). I don't think the train stops right at the Ft. Laud airport but there might be a bus/shuttle from there to the airport that's included in train price but if not, you'll still have to get to the airport in order to get a shuttle or either take a taxi from the train drop off point to the Port - $. Other considerations: You're going on a cruise, right? That means lots of baggage, right? I can't imagine schlepping alot of luggage on/off a train, then a bus/shuttle, etc. Also, I "think" the train you're referring to is a commuter line, which I wouldn't consider a "real" train, like Amtrak. If you've never ridden a real train, why not make that a future "adventure", one that involves at least 8 hours of travel, vs. the 1 hr. or so from West Palm to Ft. Laud.

Thought of another option of where to stay on either the pre or post-cruise portion. I LOVE Delray Beach, between West Palm and Ft. Lauderdale - again, it would be best to rent a car and drive down from the West Palm airport (about 30-40 mins), but if you decide to stay in West Palm pre-cruise, you might consider staying in Delray post-cruise. I think Delray has the best public beaches in the area and a walkable downtown area with good restaurants, small shops/galleries, and a charm lacking in most S. FL cities/burgs. A good day trip (or half-day or just up and back) is the pretty drive on A1A from Delray up to Palm Beach (not WEST Palm). I've stayed only at the Marriott in Delray, but there are probably more interesting places to stay.

Whatever you choose, please post a message post-trip to let us other TA members know how it worked out - always looking for useful info - Thanks!
