Honeymoon in Singer Island, FLA

Me and my fiance are getting married in early October, and have booked a time share with Palm Beach Shores in Singer Island, FLA for our honeymoon. The resort description and ammenity break down that RCI gave us was good enough for both of us that we decided to go ahead and make the trade for October. Of course, since then we have been excited and anxious about our honeymoon especially knowing that this resort is listed as a "gold crown" resort. However, I just finished watching a show on National Geographic about notorious gang syndicates, and the first one they documented was a gang based in Lake Worth (which I noticed was either on, or nearby Singer Island). Naturally, I got scared and jumped on my laptop looking for information describing the area where my honeymoon is to take place. I discovered a lot of mixed reviews, but what everyone seems to agree on is that the location is "sketchy". Now, I live in Columbia, SC and there are some rough neighborhoods that have a lot of payday loan offices, adult thrift stores, second-hand auto dealerships, etc. All I want to know is how "bad" is Singer Island and it's surrounding areas? Is Singer Island like a resort-oasis in the middle of a desolent desert, or is it night/day compared to the neighboring inland? Do I have to travel 15 miles north to get to a Wal-Mart? What is the REAL Singer Island, FLA? Does it sort of compare to Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, Vero Beach? I appreciate anybody's suggestions. I am a little scared about telling my fiance about that gang show I saw....

I can understand your concern as Riveria Beach and some parts of West Palm and Lake Worth are a little sketchy. Singer Island however is very very nice. When you leave your resort head north on A1a to PGA Blvd. John McArthur Park is on this drive and worth checking out. PGA Blvd in Palm Beach Gardens has a ton of restaurants, a really nice mall, and a lot to do. Up north a little is Jupiter, FL which is an upscale town as well with lots of nice restaurants. City Place in West Palm Beach is also a lot of fun.

I have lived in Jupiter since October and I absolutely love it. It is the tropical paradise that would be perfect for a honeymoon. You and your new bride will be pleased.

Also buy some snorkeling gear and check out Coral Cove State Park while visiting.

Write back with any questions you may have.

We own at Ocean Pointe (which is where I think you are staying). We absolutely LOVE it there! I saw the gangland program too last week and was baffled to see that such a notorious gang was in the area. The city of Lake Worth which is where the majority of the gang problems are, is south of where you are staying. There is a sketchy area across the bridge called Riviera Beach. If you travel thru this area during the day, you should be fine. If you feel uncomfortable driving thru this area, you can always get to the resort from the north. This is a very pretty drive along the shore. But overall, the resort and it's surrounding area is very nice. Don't cancel your plans! Little tip for a good restaurant, if you like seafood, try Little Moir's Food Shack in Jupiter. AWESOME food!!!

I have lived in this area for over 20 years and live (literally) right across the Intracoastal from Singer Island. We stayed at the Ocean Pointe Resort last year for a week when work was being done on our condo. The area is great and no worries regarding safety. I, too, am a bit perplexed about the show on the gang in Lake Worth - you'd think that those of us who live in the area would have heard SOMETHING on the news about it! While staying on Singer Island, I walked a lot by myself to many areas and felt perfectly safe. Singer Island is a lovely place with plenty of amenities close by. You DO have to travel about 15 miles north to get to WalMart in Jupiter, but there is a Target, another WalMart, a KMart, and a Kohl's close by in Lake Park. There is an upscale mall about 5 miles up PGA Blvd. There is great snorkeling, watersports, fishing, kayaking on Singer Island.

We've stayed on Singer Island many, many times and I would never feel in danger. Lake Worth is far enough away for it to be a non-issue.

It is true that just over the bridge from Singer Island are some pretty lousy areas. However, we've never had or seen any gangs venturing over the bridge. Singer Island is a pretty small area and I usually see a pretty good police presence.

My band played at a club on Singer Island last year and a fight broke out between a couple of drunk guys in their early 20s. The police showed up within minutes.

Yes, Singer Island is the oasis surrounded by bad areas, but honestly, you'll be fine. Enjoy your honeymoon.

JRadar - there are two bridges onto Singer Island. Just use the north bridge when you leave the island. it takes you to Palm Beach Gardens, Juno and Jupiter. If you go to West Palm for a day, you can hop on the 95 using the same bridge up PGA. On PGA there are plenty of places to eat, shop, drink and party. The beaches on singer island are LOADED with turtle nests (it has been a banner year!) and in ocetober there are plenty of turtle hatchlings poppin up. Be on the look out for them very early in the morning (sunrise). I do not recommend hangin out on the beach late at night to see them.

Also there is a turtle hosital in Juno that will have plenty of rescued hatchlings and juvenile rehabbing turtles. You can snorkel and kayak at MacArthur Park right on the Island, there are several great party Tiki Bars in the area (off isalnd) and there is actually a great Tiki Bar where you are staying at Palm Beach shores. You are just a wee bit north of the Marriott Oceanpointe.

Congrats! You will have a great time and have chosen a great spot for a honeymoon .

We own a week at Palm Beach Shores resort(Radison West Palm Beach) which is right down the beach from the MArriott proprty. We actually purchased a week after we stayed at the Marriott property several years ago. It is a very nice resort. The water kinda drops off pretty quick in depth though so be careful if you get into the ocean. I agree with teh other postings about some sketchy area's, but you will be fine. We have come through the not so good area during the daytime and it doesn't look any worse than downtown Kansas City which is close to where I live. Be sure and walk to the Sailfish Marina which is VERY close by. They have a nice rest. and you can see all kinds of boats pulling in with their catch of the day. One time we saw a shark which my son thought was cool. You can feed the fish right off the dock and there are so many colorful fish to see. Also check out the turtle sactuary. It is pretty interesting. Hope your wedding and time on Singer Island is great.
