need help or suggestion on a big decision to move

Hi

I am from Louisiana (southwest side) my husband got an offer to move to West Palm Beach or Litchfield County in Connecticut. We are trying to make a wise decison based off of cost of living-weather and stuff to do as well as myself gaining employment. People who are natives of Florida or Connecticut can you give me any suggestions or advise.

thanks

hi the weather is great most of the time, but florida itself is a horrible place to live and bring up kids if you have them....scam after scam....workmanship terrible, nobody speaks english and hurricanes are HORRIBLE and the education is the lowest in the entire usa....we are here for 16 years and looking to leave somehow.....think twice

and it used to be reasonable to live here...not anymore, just being honest with you...so sorry think twice

Hello,

I live in CT and I have also lived in Florida, in Palm Beach county. They are two completely different worlds. Can you tell me a little bit about your family and what you guys do for work and what you like to do for fun? Do you have children?

I was born in NJ and raised in CT, Fairfield County area. CT is much more affluent in general than Florida. I currently live in CT, New Haven.

My mother lives in Lake Worth Florida and has been there quite some time. All of the homes are cookie cutters, there is no quality of life (unless you are an avid beach goer, or if you get depressed during winters, then it might be ok)

There is no scenery, it's so flat, food is awful, people are not the same.

In New Englad, things are more affluent, more charming, more diverse, there is more opportunity, hands down.

Please send me questions in specific if you have them, about towns, etc.

thanks

Hi

My husband works for the post office and I would be looking for a job --I have experience in retail and clerical. We love to go antique stores, fishing, traveling etc. on weekends. I love shopping my husband comes with me sometimes but he is also an avid hunter/fisherman. We have no children --yet--but are considering at least one in the future. Florida is attractive in the fact there is so much to do there. We do not know alot about CT. I have been going down to the Disney World area for at least 20 years I love that place. My husband lived in Germany for 3 years while in the military. He is ready to move for a change. I have never lived outside Louisiana. He got an offer to transfer to the Litchfield post office. It looks beautiful up there but he also got an offer to go to West Palm Beach area.

We now live on almost 3 acres in a 2700 square foort cedar house outside city limits. We prefer a secluded rural setting. We are looking for an area in Fl or CT that has decent house prices and not high taxes.

Have lived in PB county 5 years. Winter weather is great, however I think ALL of NYC moves here in the winter. Prices for housing is high. Median price for houses in $400K. No state income tax, property taxes = 2% of sales price. seafood is outstanding. The area is growing like crazy. If you are looking for more affordable, rural housing look at the interior cities in Fl. Ocala,Leesburg,Lake City,Lake Wales, etc. People on FL. West coast much friendlier than East coast.

New Englad and especially from CT on up is King for hunting/fishing and antique shops. You can not beat New England seafood at all. When I visit my mother in PBC on the coast, I don't care for the seafood. If you're a "foodie" come to new england. Though I don't think you will find low tax prices in either state. Two very expensives areas of the country.

If you have town names in mind, run them by me and I can give you an honest opinion.

If we went to Fl we were looking at Palm Springs,Greenacres and Palm Beach Gardens (I guess). I had suggested Port St. Lucie but my husband says to far a commute--it would need to be a 20 to 25 minute commute to West Palm Beach were he would be working.

Connecticut would also need to be a 20 to 25 minute commute to Litchfield prefer small town but with easy access to shopping areas etc. Many people say do not go to Waterbury--was thinking outside Torrington if we went to CT--do not know never been to CT. Farest I went down in Florida was Orlando. My husband loves to hunt but we also salt water fishing as well as fresh water. How is traffic and does it flow well? Do not know if you have ever been to Houston and drove around is it jammed like they are sometimes? How about crime in the cities listed above?

I'll try to answer some of these questions...are you planning to take a trip to these areas before you make your decision?

If we went to Fl we were looking at Palm Springs,Greenacres and Palm Beach Gardens (I guess).

**I lived briefly in palm springs, less than a year, it was awful.

I had suggested Port St. Lucie but my husband says to far a commute--it would need to be a 20 to 25 minute commute to West Palm Beach were he would be working.

**I have a friend in ST. Lucie and have been there, it is a nice area, but you are going to pay to live there. That's too far to commute, he is right.

Connecticut would also need to be a 20 to 25 minute commute to Litchfield prefer small town but with easy access to shopping areas etc. Many people say do not go to Waterbury--was thinking outside Torrington if we went to CT--do not know never been to CT.

***DO NOT MOVE TO WATERBURY, IT IS AWFUL, you don't even want to work there***

Farest I went down in Florida was Orlando. My husband loves to hunt but we also salt water fishing as well as fresh water.

**The England is on the coast, there is plenty of salt water. It's lovely.

How is traffic and does it flow well? Do not know if you have ever been to Houston and drove around is it jammed like they are sometimes? How about crime in the cities listed above?

**As far as traffic, PBC is terrible, it's becoming more and more over crowded. It's not like the gulf coast where things are a bit more slow, though I'm being told it is getting more and more congested. PBC seems to be made up of people who moved from the Tristate area (NY, NJ, CT) in search of more quality of life, but it's really just been tranformed into a busy, congested area with awful schools.

Here is a website that shows a map of litchfield. Maybe you should call a realestate agent and see if they can answer some more of your specific questions if you have any.

Thanks for the information--I will pass this information along to my husband. The Gulf coast--even here is getting really high in housing cost-- a decent 2000 to 2700 square foot house here could run 250,000 to 500,000 or more depending what neighborhood you are in and if you are on the river. Also what you but in the house --construction cost went up more after Rita to build a house here it was 85.00 per square foot before Rita now it is 100.00 per square foot. Probulary low to south Florida costs. River front property here is riduculous--was not until we got our casinos then it went nuts. We are looking to go to different place and experience new stuff--been here to long. Looking at Florida has been sticker shock.

but this will help alot with our decision. Thanks.

I think you need to look at some real estate costs. I love Ct, wouldn't live anywhere lese and Litchfield is gorgeous. BUT on a post office salary you would be living in a very modest little house. Check the ads on line. You will have nothing like where you now live. I have a 1400 sq ft house in a town more modest than Litchfield and it's worth aobut $300,000. Know the supt of schools in Litchfield and he's wonderful, dedicated.

Also differences are New Englands are reserved, dignified, liberal in politics and keep quiet about religion. Best antiquing in the world. Whne you vist go to Woodbruy, a town of dozens of antique shops but the costs are daunting.

Poster is right about Waterbury. Don't consder it. Schools are awful and city is riddled with crime. # former mayors were indicted, the last got 37 years for pedophilia.

Litvhid is a jewel in all of the USA but pricey. Also they get a lot of snow and cold wind. summers are gorgeous. More outdoor and lad back quality of life in Fla but he schools are terrible. Proably cheaper housing.

Good luck with your decesion.
