Other Post Falls Questions

My husband and I are planing to move to Post Falls with our three children in June. I read the forum for Post Falls, but I had a few other questions. See my oldest child, Brandon, who is fourteen is very animal oriented. He plans on getting a zoology degree and he was wondering if there were any zoos near Post Falls. He would love to volunteer at a zoo while he is finishing highschool.

We are coming from a very high crime area, Yakima Washington, and I was wondering if there were any gang problems in Post Falls, because that's what I'm hoping to get away from. At the moment my children are young and were mostly raised in a small city, but after living here for a while I've come to the conclusion that this area is not suited for raising children especially if you are planing to send them to public school. My ten year old son leans more toward the poetic type and is very sensative has been teased incessently at the school he is attending. I haven't recieved much help from the school administration for this problem. My daughter is the athletic type so she should fit in, but I have to think about all of my children. If anyone could, please, help me out with some information I would greatly apreciate it.

Thank you,

Hopefully KirkandMimi will respond, they live in the Post Falls area and have more direct experience with the schools, my only experience is having graduated from Post Falls back in the 70's. One alternative to Post Falls School District is the Coeur d' Alene Charter Academy which is academically oriented and seems to be very successful, web site: www.cdacharter.org . The nearest "zoo" is a private zoo in Spokane called Cat Tails, web site: www.cattales.org Another possibility would be to contact the Idaho Fish and Game here in Coeur d' Alene which may have some volunteer opportunities. Hope this helps.

Hi Shirley,

Sorry to hear Yakima has such a crime problem there -- I had no idea!

I'll start with the zoology part of the question.

My kids are 16 and 14 and we're all big animal lovers (have a lot of cats!). My daughter wants to be a veterinarian and she's actually been "shadowing" our local vet on and off for about 4 years (she's the 14 year old). When she was as young as 10 she would suit up and assist Dr. Ridgeway (Appleway Veterinary Clinic) with minor operations. It was a great experience for her and this year she'll actually start working (meaning getting paid) for helping up around the office. nidahodave is right about Cat Tales. It's so much fun and your kids will love it. I got to hand feed a tiger a few years ago and it was quite an experience (through a chain link fence). They also have a bear or two, but it's almost all big cats. I'm not sure of their requirements for volunteering, but I believe they have info on their website which Dave gave to you.

As far as crime -- Post Falls is not a high crime area and so far we've avoided any gang problems. That's not to see there aren't some really dopey kids in middle and high school, but I guess that's everywhere now. We've had a few situations over the years with bullying and both times we went straight to the school and they addressed it immediately. We pressed charges against one of the kids (this was a physical attack) and the police and school were both great and the student was expelled.

I don't want to scare you off -- like I said there are bad kids everywhere including Post Falls, but I do believe that in general the kids are pretty respectful and decent here. Sports are great for the kids and there's a huge emphasis on sports activities in both Post Falls middles schools and the high school.

Let me know if you have any more questions....

Thank you both of you for all your wonderful information. My son is very excited about the exotic animals. At the moment he has one python, a few rats, two parakeets, a cockatiel, a dove, two cats, and two dogs - what a farm! - but he would love to work with zoo type animals.

Thank you again!
