Transportation in Chicago

We will be visiting Chicago for a week in July. We are not sure whether we should fly or drive. Parking seems to be rather expensive. We will be staying around 40th and Grand. What would be the easiest way to get around?

Thanks

No need to have a car while you're here. Parking downtown is expensive. For public transit information - www.transitchicago.com.

40th & Grand Ave do not cross. If you could clarify the address, we'll be happy to offer advice.

Thanks for the help! We will be staying at the Homewood Suites and the address is listed as 40 East Grand Street. Would a taxi be the cheapest route from the airport to where we will be staying? Thanks again for the help.

OK. Now the address makes sense. I'm assuming you're coming in from O'Hare. The easiest/cheapest way would be to take the CTA blue line train to Clark/Lake. Catch a cab from there to your hotel.

If you're coming in from Midway, take the orange line train to Roosevelt. Transfer to a northbound (Howard St) red line train. Get off at Grand. Walk east to your hotel.

On the link Dave148 provided, you can also get info about visitor passes that allow unlimited travel on CTA buses and trains. There are vending machines at both airports that accept cash and plastic.

Thanks for all the help. We have decided to fly. I hope where we are staying is centrally located. It sounds like it is pretty close to the tourist attractions.

Trains are great, but sometimes a cab is just easier, especially for a first timer. Cabs are around 35-40 dollars, and are convenient too. Just a matter of preference and how much luggage your hauling. You have plenty of options.
