unique/ quirky roadtrip ideas from Chicago?

Husband & I (early 30's) are on a limited budget & thought of visiting funny or unique places/ attractions on a weekend roadtrip within 4 hours or so from Chicago. I was looking for places in IL, IN, WI or MI. Like the biggest ball of string, ha ha. Something to get out of town & see what's around, maybe eat a little & shop a little too.

For example, I found House on the Rock in WI, and also the "Trollway" in IN (where there are many trolls carved out of wood all along the streets of this little town). There was also something I saw a long time ago about a tourist attraction of a little house in IN that was built into the side of a mountain that felt like you were walking lopsided, but you really weren't. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

Any other fun places to visit?

I did check out that site, although there was nothing good on there.

You may be thinking of "The Wonder Spot" in Lake Delton, WI - but I believe it was torn down 1-2 years ago.

Also check out Mount Horeb & New Glarus areas of Wisconsin. Not too far from House on Rock.

Yes, That's what I meant - Mt. Horeb in WI (not IN). I forgot the town name.

Is Wild Chicago still on TV? They used to go to some pretty funky places. You might find some ideas on one of these links

Pierogifest in Whiting, IN is a lot of fun.

You could go to the circus museum in Baraboo WI,

You could combine it over a weekend with a visit to House on the Rock, which to me captures the essence of "quirky". Another fun idea is the Wisconsin State Fair in August in Milwaukee - don't miss the Cream Puffs.

Holland MI is not quirky but it is unique. The best time to visit is during the Tulip Festival in May, but it's an interesting place at any time.

You could drive down to Metropolis and see the Superman statue. http://www.metropolischamber.com/

There's a book called "Wisconsin Curiosities" which might give you some ideas. For example, there seems to be a Houdini museum in Appleton.

Another book to recommend is Illinois - Off the Beaten Path by Bob Puhala. It's part of a series of Off the Beaten Path books. I think they have one for every state, and we have visited some pretty unusual places as a result of reading them. Your public library may have the series.

BTW, we went to a place like the one you describe in the Irish Hills area of Michigan called Mystery Hill. I think there are a lot of these places across the country. Kind of hokey, but fun.

Here are a few June events in Michigan. Several places along Lake Michigan and into Kalamazoo are within 3-4 hrs. drive. Not necessarily quirky or unique, but maybe a free festival you might enjoy.

GREAT CALL on Pierogi Fest. If you want unique and quirky, look no further.
