Oak Park, River Forest lodging

We are coming to Chicago this summer, my mom's family is originally from Oak Park and River Forest. We would like to stay in this area. Any recommendations of places to stay or eat? We will have a car.

I understand the El runs here also. Is the El the best way to get to MSI and downtown (Sears Tower). Thanks for the help.

The Charlton is an okay hotel. The restaurant in the lobby, Poor Phil's is good. There is a Metra train, a suburban train, that will take you a couple of blocks from the Willis Tower. There are a El trains that go downtown which are safe but they go through some of the worst parts of Chicago.

Drive to MSI. Park outside aroud the side. It is maybe a $1 an hour.

The restaurant in the Carlton hotel is Philanders, somewhat fine dining and good food and atmosphere. Poor Phils, more of a pub atmosphere is next door. If you decide to stay here I would get a room inside the hotel, not the adjacent rooms that are in rows with direct outside entrance.

Oak Park is a nice, mixed town and very close to either the CTA or Metra trains.
