First Weekend in Dec...First Timer

Hi, we're considering visiting for Chicago for the first time the first weekend in December. Arriving on Friday and leaving Monday. Looking for recommendations for hotels, restaurants, bars, shows, tours, etc... We want to be in the middle of it all, so to speak. Anything we simply can't miss? We're looking to spend around $250 a night...will that get us into a nice hotel? I want something better than an Embassy Suites, but does not have to be as nice as a 4 Seasons-type of hotel. Anything you can recommend is appreciated. Thanks in advance!! We're in our mid 40s to early 50s if that helps. We're also looking for really nice bars, jazz clubs, piano bars, etc..

Check the Wit and Conrad. Both are nice and cheap on weekends. Sofitel is good and should be under $250. Andy's and Jazz Showcase for jazz. Blues Chicago for Blues.

The weekend is Dec 2-4 then. I think you will have just missed a big medical convention that ends on Dec 2. I don't know if there are any other meetings that weekend, but hotel prices tend to be near extortionate with conventions. If not, I think you may be able to try for some boutique hotels in river north or mag mile as mentioned above. The Witt, kimpton hotels, Westin R North, Sofitel are some of my favorites but have no idea on prices for that weekend. Plus you have to allow a hefty city tax.

At that time of year we like the Hilton Garden Inn which is at State and Grand. You can walk to the Kristkindle Mart, an open air marketplace that sells beautiful handmade X-Mas items from Germany as well as food and hot spiced wine and German beer. From there it's a short walk to Macys on State Street which does a nice job decorating for the holidays. This hotel is also close to Michigan Avenue and some great dining including Keefers, Joes , Bennys Chop House and Ruth Chris steakhouse. Deep Dish pizza just around the corner as well. The Bears are at home that Sunday for a noon game and you can walk to several places to watch the game including Mother Hubbards, Rockit Bar and Grille, Rock Bottom brewery and Jake Melnicks corner tap. Enjoy your trip!

Almost forgot, if you have time, try to stop into Butch McGuires bar on Division just of off Rush Street for a couple of drinks. Great decorations.
