Area to avoid cntnd

We are planning to stay at Chicago's Essex Inn

800 S Michigan Ave

Safe? Good area of Michigan to walk? Too South?

It wouldn't be my first choice of areas to stay just because it is a tad south. However, it is close the musuems and the park so it's good. You can always take the bus up to north michigan and back. A giant Hilton is a block away at 720 South Michigan that has a few restaurants and Mercat is a wonderful tapas restaurant in the Marriott Blackstone at 600 S. Michigan. So you will be in good company.

Sounds like you're looking for budget properties. You might want to consider Hotwire or Priceline and perhaps scoring a nicer property.

It's not the area that I would question, it's the hotel. Find some place else.

Have to agree with Shallow. You can do much better in a hotel and the thing is, at night, it gets pretty lonely down there compared to further north.

Have to agree with others. This hotel is a tad shabby, run down. The area is much more up and coming than it used to be - Roosevelt Avenue has changed considerably over the years and towards the lake end offers more variety of dining options.

Try Travelzoo for better chicago hotel options.

So we moved more north- Comfort Suites at 320 N Michigan Ave

It seems to have really good reviews on the hotel and the area.

Thoughts?

Thank you for everyone's input by the way- I really appreciate it!

That's more like it. You'll be one block south of the River. The Loop behind you, Illinois Center/Millennium Park in front of you and River North/Magnificent Mile across the river. ... a great walking location.

My wife and I have stayed there. We loved it. The location is great for whatever you want to do.
