First time visitor with family, where to stay.

Coming to Chicago September 3-6 wi husband, mum and two 13 kids. Can't work out where to stay. Am flexible about the hotel as want the location to be easy for tourist things and restaurants. Am looking at Fairmont, Omni, peninsula, renaissance, Jw Marriott, residence inn. Advice please as don't want to have to walk further than necessary as want to use our energy exploring the lovely city.

JW Marriott is for business people or train travelers. It's not what you want.

Both Residence Inns are well located, and the breakfast buffet gives everyone a little freedom in the mornings. The one on Dearborn is hipper; the one on Walton has two bedroom suites, if that's what you are looking for. The Omni is between the two in location.

The Fairmont and Renaissance (on Wacker) are close together and fairly similar. The Ren gives a feeling of being right in the heart of things, while the Fairmont is quieter. The Ren and the Residence Inn have pools; I believe the others don't.

All are well located from a visitor's perspective. You can read reviews of each property in TA.

No need to limit yourself to footpower for getting around. CTA trains and buses will get you anywhere you'll need to go. http://www.transitchicago.com/default.aspx

You cannot really go too wrong if you stay on Michigan Ave or within one or two blocks either way, maybe three. Stay north of the Chicago River. Use hotels.com or hrs.com or some such search engine to find the best deal. PGO gives great advice above, Walking is easy in the area you are looking at, so not to worry. However, the thing about Chicago is that it is spread out. To really see if you need to get out of downtown and into the neighborhoods. There is very good public transportation to enable you to do this easily.

I wanted to add that the Peninsula is a true luxury hotel that is far above the others, including their pool and other services.
