to chica-GO or NOT

Going to Vegas for 4 nights over new years eve but was looking at doing a few nights in Chicago before hand.

Know little or nothing about the city. we are looking at strolling around enjoying the sights but also chilling, enjoying food, drink and music not sure what areas would be best.

We have 2 questions really:

1.What hotel would be best (but don't have to take a mortgage out to stay in).

2. Are we crazy visiting at this time of year - weather wise and being so close to Christmas?

You have 30+ hotels to choose from. From The Essex House to the Waldorf Astoria. You will have to do a little of your own homework and give us some guidance. Use TA hotels menu and look in The Loop and Near North areas. As to what there is to do: there's no baseball but everything else is available. We spend a lot of time indoors in January so there's lots to do: indoors. What do you want to do? Use the search engine to find out what Chicago has in line with your interests. We don't know you. Lastly, January is cold but the holiday decor and spirit is still abundant. Whether or not the weather will suit you is up to you. With climate change, we can't predict what it will be like next year let alone next week. 2 years ago it was 60 degress, this year it was 30 degrees but no snow. Next January may be both.

Chicago is known for excellent restaurants, museums( the Chicago Art Institute is easily one of top 5 in the world) theatre second only to new York and London. Also very good jazz and blues. But the highlight of Chicago is the architecture. The home of the skyscraper and career starting place for Frank Lloyd Wright. It's a great city.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Chicago in the Winter. Near Christmas time everything is done up to the hilt... it's just gorgeous. I think you're picking the perfect time to visit, personally! Yes, it will be cold, but it will still be worth it!

We make several trips into the city yearly, but December is my favorite time of year and usually plan an overnight for that one. The conventions shy away and the summer tourists are gone so hotel rates are fab. I just looked at Hotwire for the 27 thru 30th of Dec and 4 star Mag mile $67.00. 41/2 star $109.00 That's about 1/3 of what you'd pay in the summer so no second mortgage required. If you stick to Mag Mile, Water Tower, River North area, and sure of your dates, NO refunds or changes, you really can't go wrong. If you're squeamish about buying blind, rates on other sites should be great too, just not that great.

The kids are out of school that week, so the museums will be more crowded with locals and day trippers from the burbs, but other than that and the likely cold weather, it's a beautiful time to visit. I definitely vote for GO.
