First Time Chicago Visit

Hi

I hope someone can help.

I am travelling to Chicago for five nights on the 13th September with a mate. The main reason is to see the Chicago bears. However I am trying to work out the best place to stay, close to the main bars and restaurants.

Our budget is about up to about £120 per night for the room. My brother in law stayed in the red roof inn and said it was in a great location and a nice hotel, but then someone said it was not very nice. However looking on the net Viagra Triangle and W Division St seem to be the main areas.

I am not worried about facilities at the hotel, bed and shower with a bar in a good location so that we can walk to most areas. Another hotel I saw was Howard Johnson but again not sure if this is a good area

I would be most grateful for any help or advice

Many thanks

Rob

Check your options on hotels.com, booking.com or a similar site. I honestly think you are a little early for deals. That week should not be too bad in terms of conventions. Make a reservation that can be cancelled, and then keep looking for something better. Your budget is on the low side, but not unrealistic.

Of the hotels you mentioned, the Red Roof is pretty basic, but it is better in quality and location than the Howard Johnson's. You can read reviews here or on many other booking sites.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed the budget was really restricting me when I was looking on those sites. In terms of location is the red roof the main part? I also saw the Essex inn and got a good price on that, is this hotel in a good location, appears to be not to far walking to magnificent mile?

Red Roof is in a great location. It's one block from Michigan Avenue and a central to shopping and dining.

Essex is closer to Soldier Field and the museum campus area.

There are bars and restaurants near the Essex. The Essex is on Michigan Ave south of the Chicago River. The Mag Mile area is Michigan Ave north of the river.

Here's a good online map of the downtown area to help you put things in perspective - transitchicago.com/assets/…200806d.htm

Regardless of where you decide to stay CTA buses and trains along with taxis will get you wherever you need to go.

The Essex Inn is usually not recommended for it's southern Loop location and it's quality. It is a budget hotel. However, public transit on Michigan Ave. is great and you can get most anywhere in the city from The Loop (business district). Being the business district, it gets pretty lonely down there at night. The Mag. Mile is 2-3 miles north of The Essex. The Red Roof Inn is the least expensive tourist hotel in tourist central (Magnificent Mile) It's basic but good. I'd choose that over the Essex any day. It's also closer (walking distance) to the nightlife areas you mention. Howard Johnson's (HoJo's) is not recommended. It's cheap for a reason; and not a good reason.

There is a big convention of 50,000 that ends on the 12th, and has reserved a lot of rooms at the low to medium priced hotels. That's why I recommend reserving something but not committing yourself at this point. You'll want to check prices again in August to look for deals, or try Hotwire or Priceline at that time.
