IMO - give yourself three hour of driving time.

We drove most of that route last night from Wisconsin over I 90 East, and then south on 53. Between Rockford and Schaumburg, the speed limit is 45 due to construction, and that's about what traffic was doing. (I'm sure you are aware of this if you are in the Rockford area now.) Slow going. At one point traffic came to a complete stop. Allow enough time.
Maybe use 39 to 88, then 294 to 55 to avoid I-90 construction zone.
Thanks to everyone for your advice and the construction map (very helpful!). We used the map to plot an alternate route, the one Cliff_rock suggested, and the trip only took 2 hours and 20 mins - including getting gas and dropping off the rental car.
The one slow down was the Cicero exit, the Central exit was closed and they detoured all traffic to Cicero - if you stay in the right lane (tight squeeze) you can get out of the detoured traffic and turn right onto Cicero to go to the airport.
