Chicago to New Orelans by car in December

HI guys,

looking at driving down to New Orleans from Chicago around christmas time.

As we're not from USA, just looking for advice or experiences with the drive, particularly in winter. Will snowfall be an issue when trying to get out of Chicago? We're planning to stop in memphis on the way for a night.

As we will be travelling with pets, the amtrak doesn't appear to be an option.

Thanks

just keep an eye on the weather:

intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx…

…wunderground.com/cgi-bin/…

and listen to AM 780/FM 105.9 for local chicago weather and traffic reports every 10 minutes.....

snowfall can, and has been an issue so far this year, especially south of chicago..... downstate got over a foot of snow and ice in recent days.... plain snowfall on the interstates can be manageable, BUT ice will be treacherous at best, even for seasoned winter drivers... IF there is any indication of ice precipitation, GET OFF the road ASAP and wait it out, or stay the night or whatever.... the good news is the roads are usually cleared and clean within a day or so of a winter weather event.....

chances are, the weather will be fine for you, HOWEVER, you must be aware of the weather/road condition forecasts... this winter has arrived early and hard this year, so be aware!!!!

Generally speaking Interstate highways are well maintained.

Driving from Chicago to Memphis will probably take at least 8 hours, and that's assuming that you don't stop and the weather is favorable. Also, the southern states are not equipped to deal with snow or ice on the roads and will close the roads in such conditions. It is not a normal thing down there, but it seems that every year they get hit with freezing rain at least once.

Umm, yes- - - how can you come from Singapore with pets??? There's a three month quarantine, even with proper documents.

today they said the light snow would start after 12pm, i left downtown at 8am to cut down an xmas tree near the WI border, it was already snowing when we got thereat 9am and when we left at 10"30 it was a mess,we saw lots of accidents

its just a bit unpredictable

A chain reaction crash involving "about 50 cars" has shut down the Pennsylvania Turnpike after drivers and road crews were caught off-guard by the intensity of the snowfall, according to state police--> http://bit.ly/18uiZbb

And in the midwest, at least one person is dead and several others injured in crashes due to slick weather condition in southeast Wisconsin--> http://bit.ly/1def1Ds

and they predicted less than an inch today, 12 hours later its STILL snowing

if you have no experience driving in the snow this is just a bad idea
