Chicago sight seeing suggestions for 4 days

We are driving to Chicago on 9-14-2014 for 4 full days (Monday through Thursday, may be arrival day Sunday late afternoon and evening as well) for sight seeing of the city. (2 adults late 50's good physical condition for biking and walking.) We will have our own bikes with us. Any suggestions to see the highlights of the city (walking/biking/public transportation) for the 4 to 4-1/2 days would be greatly appreciated.

We will be staying at the Best Western River North Hotel, 125 W Ohio Street Chicago 60654

Thank you so much in advance for some great suggestions.

I would recommend:

Shedd for a day

Walk down Michigan avenue

Take the blue line to Damen and walk around Wicker Park/Bucktown, eat at Piece

Take your bikes to the 31st street Harbor (good parking there) and bike north up the Lake Shore drive trail from there

Get some Garretts popcorn

Just don't over schedule - take time to enjoy our city.

Have fun!

Please keep in mind that although Chicago likes to paint it self as a bike friendly city. Outside of the lakefront it is not an easy place to ride. Most cars and certainly the cabs are not used to bikes. Divy bikes have helped (or hurt) depending on who you ask but we still have a long way to go IMO.

This may sound a little negative but it's your safety of which we are concerned.

John, you need to understand that there aren't yet many dedicated or protected bike lanes in Chicago as of this date. There is supposed to be 100 miles total eventually and as of April of this year, there was about half that amount.

You'll be sharing the road with vehicular traffic (cabs, busses, trucks, etc.) on your way from your hotel to the lakefront, if that is your intent, and perhaps elsewhere. Look at the map of bike routes by using this: cityofchicago.org/city/…bike.html It will show you where the bike routes are located, what type they are, in which direction of travel you can utilize them, what hazards to be aware of be along the way (i.e., gratings on bridges, etc.).

Helmets are required and you should invest in other safety gear as well for your own protection.

Now I know that you are from a good-size city, but are you familiar with biking in a major metropolitan area (such as NYC, SF, Chicago)? If not, strongly recommend that you thoroughly read the information provided in that above website. Look at the photos of how you would have to share the road - especially in those areas which are not protected.

If you feel uncomfortable with biking continuously, consider alternatives. For example, all CTA busses are equipped with bike racks in front. You could combine taking a bus and biking.

Also, have you confirmed with the hotel if they will allow you to keep those bikes in the room?

You'll need very good bike locks.

Thank you so much for your concern about biking, they are very much valid. We will definitely consider your suggestion on the bus and biking combo. That way hopefully we can get to the area on the bus with the bikes to do our biking.

I do have a very good lock, thank you for reminding us on that too. The hotel (Best Western River North at 125 W. Ohio Street) told us that parking is free on their lot and bikes are O.K. I'm hoping that the hotel location will help to get to a safe place to use our bikes.

Again, any suggestion is greatly appreciated !!!
