Things to Do & Restaurants in Evanston?

I've been to Chicago a lot but never to Evanston.

We are in town for a wedding Labor Day weekend and I will take my husband to some of my favorite things around the city; however, we'd love recommendations for restaurants in Evanston (breakfast, lunch, dinner & any cuisine type), sports bars, shopping, and general things to do.

We're staying at Hilton Orrington if that helps you with regards to location.

Thanks (& Go Cubs!)

The Orpington is right downtown. Check out Dave's link for shops and restaurants. There's lots in walking distance. Not a lot of traditional tourist attractions but the lake with its beaches is walking distance. Northwestern campus makes a nice stroll.

In addition to all the doings in downtown Evanston, catch the Purple Line north to Linden Avenue and walk a couple blocks east to the Baha'i Temple. If you have a car, you can also drive north on Sheridan Road. You can visit the building and grounds until 10 pm daily. It also has a visitor center on the lower level.

Evanston has a sort of two-tiered system where one type of restaurant appeals to student tastes and budgets, and another to the upscale, older locals. You'll be able to tell the difference pretty easily.

Stained Glass Wine Bar has good food; we also like Koi (but there are many good pan-Asian places) and Tapas Barcelona. You can get some Chicago classics at Malnati's pizza and Hecky's BBQ.

If you are looking for entertainment, check out SPACE near Dempster Street, or the performances at Northwestern University, which is famous for its theatre department.

PLENTY of eating options and stuff to do in evanston.... you could find enough stuff to do to occupy yourselves for your entire stay without evenstepping foot into chicago.....

for indian himalayan:

for expensive hippy dippy eats:

fast food, but much better:

for a hip little coffee joint with a student vibe:

very good thai with great outdoor seating:

for down-home BBQ [take-out only]....

for middle eastern, go a coupla miles west into skokie:

also in skokie:

one of the few outdoor malls in this area, and rather upscale.....

second the bahai temple idea, and while you're at it, swing over by the lake and check out these beaches... AFTER labor day weekend, they'll be FREE:

space is a great idea if there's somebody playing there... otherwise, it's a cool little pizza joint....

dawes park and the n-western campus are great areas to take an evening stroll.... also, you might even catch a FREE movie in the park at dawes:

if you think about it, evanston, and the surrounding northshore suburbs are a destination in themselves...... everything i mentioned, including the museum, is within a very short drive.....
