Run !!!. Don't walk, don't even look back.

I have been there on business a couple of times and I would not live there. I've heard the schools aren't very good and it is not the safest city in the area. (did I hear correcly, that oe of the high schools in the area had to close today due to riots)

If you must live in NW Indiana, I would pick a different town further south

Are you or your husband working in Chicago? Why are you considering moving there. Where do you live now

Hi Uncle Buck. We are currently living in southeast Louisiana.

Hurricane Katrina was an eye opener. It's time to get out. We looked at several places where they had transfer openings in his field of work. His family lives up north as we thought perhaps we would move closer to them. But your information was quite helpful in determining that Hammond is not the place to go. Much appreciated.

Having been raised in Northwest Indiana - I feel I can give an honest opinion. Hammond has some beautiful homes and some not so nice. There is crime everywhere in my opinion. Highland is nice as is Munster. Hammond is where the Purdue University Calumet campus is located so the homes around the university are nice and it is a nice area. Just an opinion from someone who grew up nearby.

I hope you realize I was trying to be a little funny with some of my comments about Hammond. Especially the run, don't walk comment. I've never lived in the area, but I know people who used to and they told me their reasons why they moved. Their reasons and my own very limited personal observations are what I based my opinion on.

No don't move there. It's not nice anymore. While it used to be years ago, as I've been told, it's not nice. Valparaiso, Schererville, Crown Point, Portage, are all good. Depends on how much money you want to spend. And if you don't want to pay a lot in taxes, there are advantages to moving into unincorporated areas. You can take the train, or buses from some of these areas, if you worked in the Chicago area. There is still a steel industry north of these cities and towns, and casino jobs on the ships.

I lived in Indiana from the time I was born until I was 34 years old and I definitely would NOT want to live in Hammond. I personally don't care for Northwest Inidana in general. That part of the state is kind of depressing, really.

Try southern Indiana if you want to live in Indiana, different ball game entirely.

My boyfriend lived in Hammond. God i really hated going out there. Hammond is a dark dank decrepid run down town. It is depressing, scary and is rated one of the top dangerous cities in America.

I see your post is from last year and I pray you did not make the choice to move there...and if you did, I am willing to bet you dont live there anylonger..or were murdered..lol..ok.sorry that was not funny...but unfortunately true.

byebyegirlie, take a look at these areas instead: Chesterton, Porter or even Valparaiso.

Hammond and nearby Gary have quite a few problems. And even though Miller and Miller Beach (which are to the east of Gary) are getting better over the years, I still would have concerns with the area due to the proximity.

As the previous poster stated, if you live in these areas, you can take the South Shore Railroad into Chicago to work, if you wish. (Valparaiso would be more of a haul, as there is a .5 hr. drive to the Dune Park station. It's doable but it would be easier if you lived closer to the station.)

Good luck to you.
