Thinking of coming for Supernationals dirt track racing...

and am wondering what to do/sights to see as a break from the racing hubbub within an hour or two drive. Also, hotels in Boone seem to be pretty booked up so would appreciate ideas on where to stay. Maybe Des Moines? Or is there somewhere closer?

For places to stay, try Ames. It is closer than Des Moines. If no luck there, then try Ankeny, which is just north of Des Moines.

What sort of things do you like to do when sightseeing?

Thanks for the suggestions. My husband mentioned Ankeny after I posted this, but it does look like Ames would be closer and have several hotel options. I see also that there's an interesting hotel at Perry we might look into.

DH will mostly be interested in the racing and whatever's going on in conjunction with that. I like museums, local crafts, gardens, whatever the local "musts" are, nice walks or nature trails, historic sites, wildlife.

Would also be interested in any fairly quick but interesting stops along our route from Colorado to Boone or on the way home. Will also post on road trip forum for ideas.

If you feel like getting some exercise and the weather is nice, take a walk over the high trestle bridge: http://madridiowa.com/admin/?page_id=236.

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you all for your suggestions. Looks like it is not going to work for us to come after all, but I'll save this post to "my trips" and maybe we can make it next year!
