Des Moines Area Restaurant

Getting together for a girls weekend and chose the Des Moines area as our destination. We've got dinner plans on Saturday night at Django, our favorite place to eat in Des Moines. Looking for somewhere to eat Friday night.

We prefer to avoid chain restaurants, so if you can guide us to something uniquely Des Moines, that would be great. We don't really have any cuisines we won't try, so we are open for anything! Price point / location aren't issues either.

Thanks for your help!

The Flying Mango has great food and a relaxed atmosphere. It's not too far from Des Moines' Beaverdale area and has a loyal customer following.

If you want grill-you-own steak and the trimmings, Rube's has a location just off the interstate at the Waukee/Booneville exit. Further south on that same exit is the Waveland Cafe, which is definitely a local favorite (especially for breakfasts).

For Italian, there's Cosi Cucina in Clive or Latin King on the east side of town.

For British pub fare, there's the Royal Mile in downtown Des Moines.

For upscale Mexican, try Dos Rios downtown. For more typical Mexican, try Mi Mexico in Clive.

That list should keep you busy, but if you need more suggestions, just say the word!

I 2nd Prairiedog's recommendation on Flying Mango but if you decide to go make reservations. The food is awesome.

If you want downtown try Centro.

For the absolute best Mexican food Pueblo Viejo 3841 E 14th St. Great tasting, very reasonable price.

For Italian, besides the Latin King 2200 Hubbell Ave, which is really great, we recommend Baratta's Restaurant 2320 S Union St. It's the place that nobody can find, but when you do, you will love it.

Purely for carnivores - Iowa Beef Steak House 1201 E Euclid Ave,. You don't have to cook your own and you can split a meal.

For a very unique place, Chicago Speakeasy 1520 Euclid Ave. Great variety from prime rib, Italian, sandwiches and a very large selection at the salad bar.

Here are a couple more suggestions:

Baru 66 is wonderful more formal French is located in Windsor Heights but since you are doing French on Saturday, you may want something else.

Americana is a new place that just opened downtown on Locust St. It has great classic cocktails and a Sunday brunch, their appetizers are really good, maybe a good place to start or end your evening.

Lucca is also downtown in the east village, they have a 3 course menu that changes often.

Sbracco is a lovely winebar with small plates and some entrees in the Court Ave district.

Alba is another east village favorite really nice building and a small but flavorful menu.

Hopefully that is helpful, if you have any more questions please send me a message.
