My wife and I spent yesterday in and around Kalona. We went to the "village" and did the tour. We had a great time. The guided tour is only $7 for all of the buildings. Our personal tour guide "Rita" was very friendly, professional and informative. The Mennonite museum is especially interesting.
We then took a drive into the countryside hoping to see an Amish buggy. We saw numerous buggies and even a huge volleyball game among Amish young people. We went to the craft store and the general country store. Both were good stops where we purchased unique and useful items. I will try to find a reason to return again.
I have been to the Pennsylvania Amish area. The Kalona area is much less "touristy" with more authenticity.
