Historical trip from Wichita to Lawrence

Hello!

I lived in wichita ~35 years ago and have fond memories of Cowtown, dilapidated farms and beautiful old architecture.

I'm planning a trip there end of next month with my two DD (12yo and 9yo) and my brother.

We are visiting family but would also like to visit "unique local cultural or historical sites." We'll rent a car and dont mind driving all over. We will be there from Tuesday morning departing Saturday midnight via Amtrak.

Any suggestions???

thanks!

If you haven't been to Wichita in 35 years you'll be quite surprised at how much it's changed.

Cowtown is still a great choice. The Exploration Place is a learning center close to downtown that kids will enjoy. Next to it is the recently renovated Keeper of the Plains.

Wichita Botanica and the Sedgwick Co. Zoo are also certainly worth while. There is a butterfly house at Botanica which your children might find interesting.

For unique local cultural and history sites:

Keeper of the Plains is cool. Plan to be there for the Ring of Fire one night during your trip.

Kansas Firefighters Museum is small, but should be a hit with your family.

The original Nu-Way Cafe is still open (since 1930). All of their drive-in style food is good, but they are famous for the loose meat Nu-Way sandwiches and great in-house made root beer.

Your title suggests that you want places in Lawrence and along the way?

Does anyone in your party have a big interest in space?

Wow, 35 years ago -- brings back memories of dragging Douglas . . . Which you can't do any more because of Old Town, but that's worth a visit anyway.

Joyland has closed.

The Zoo is still here, and great as ever, but now there's also the Tanganyika animal park just west of town.
