Lexington with 8 year old granddaughter

We will be traveling with our 8 year ole granddaughter the last week of July. 2 destinations are Kentucky Horse Park and Nashville. Is there anything in Lexington or on the way to Nashville that we shouldn't miss?

The horse park and the children's museum. You might also check the schedule for the Lexington children's theatre

Two place you may want to consider

1) Explorium of Lexington - My niece and nephews loved going here when they were younger.

2) Living Arts & Science Center (http://www.lasclex.org/index.php)

Enjoy your time with your granddaughter

Well, if anyone in your family like Corvettes, you will be going right by Bowling Green, Ky., where they are made. There is a museum there, plus as far as I know they are still offering tours of the place (I went on the tour 7 years ago, so I can't vouch for the current tours).

With respect to the area by the Kentucky Horse Park, within a 15 minute or so drive is Old Friends, a horse farm for retired thoroughbreds. They offer tours three times a day, and young kids in particular really seem to enjoy getting to pet and feed the horses. Here is the website:

I'm assuming that you will be coming into Kentucky on I-75 and then cutting over to I-65 to get to Nashville - so here are ideas for things to do along that entire path through Kentucky....

Newport Ky – just across the river from Cincinnati is the Newport Aquarium. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39707-d10…

Lexington Area..

Shaker Village – a bit far away from the main interstate roads but a beautifully restored historic village – where tour ticket lets you see various crafts being made. Also carriage rides and animals. A great restaurant for the adults. You can also stay overnight in one of the buildings on the grounds if that fits with your plans. http://www.shakervillageky.org/ If you do decide to take the drive that direction to Shaker Village – then also see Fort Harrodsburg State Park tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39489-d14…

Danville Ky – perhaps she would be interested in the Doll House Museum - a collection of doll houses: http://www.thedollhousemuseum.com/

Louisville area...

Louisville Zoo – a quite respectable zoo with plenty to do with an 8 year old. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39604-d21…

Louisville Science Center – great for all ages. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39604-d10…

Waterfront park – free and some fountains to splash in. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39604-d26…

Belle of Louisville – authentic steam paddle-wheel boat: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39604-d65… Check the schedule – so you can plan appropriately.

If you want to get your granddaughter thinking about the wider world – then a free visit to the American Printing House for the Blind is a one of a kind, surprising attraction louisville.about.com/gi/o.htm…

Muth’s Candy Store near downtown louisville - www.yelp.com/biz/muths-candy-store-louisville

What kid doesn’t like pie! - see this list of stores for the Pie Kitchen in Louisville. http://www.piekitchen.com/contact.html

Bardstown and New Haven, KY area. Take a train ride. Check out the trips and special events at the Ky Railway Museum...http://www.kyrail.org/. There are only a few runs of the train during the week so plan accordingly. Suggest you stop in Bardstown for soda at Hurst Drug Store Soda Fountain 102 N. Third St. if you decide to go to New Haven to the train museum. Some kids, not all, get interested in the history at My Old Kentucky Home state park where the tour is greeted by ladies in period dress.

Horse Cave - Exit 58 - Kentucky Down Under - an animal park and cave tour. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g39519-d27… Pretty big hit with most children.

Cave City Attractions - there is Dinosaur World; and other "attractions" - see list on Trip Advisor tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g39265-Activitie… You could also really surprise her by staying the night in a tee-pee shaped motel room in Cave City. Note – this is just for the experience for an 8 year old – certainly not a luxury place to stay. See: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g39265-d258948-…

Mammoth Cave National Park - there are tours that are not too difficult for children as long as they are not the type that want to be carried. Here are some of the tour descriptions: nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/gocavetours.htm. There is also an auto-ferry in the park – which is something kids rarely see these days. If you plan on driving in from the back roads to take the ferry – be prepared for a slow winding road – or just cross over and then back again.. www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/ferries.htm

Bowling Green - an alternative to Mammoth Cave is Lost River Cave: http://lostrivercave.com/ Also in Bowling Green for an all-day activity – see Beach Bend Amusement Park http://www.beechbend.com/amusementpark.htm

And you’ll have to check dates and locations based on your travel plans – but a stop at one of the smaller county fairs in Kentucky during the summer can provide a lot of entertainment for kids without spending much. Here is the list: countyfairgrounds.net/kentucky/kentucky.php

Footnote: I would have also included the fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in the Louisville section. But with the summertime construction in the I-65 bridge across the Ohio river to Indiana and back – that may not be a good option for you.

Ooops - forgot one more thing in Louisville that might interest your granddaughter since she loves horses. The Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs has a special tour you can add on that takes visits to the backside barn area of the track. Normally that area is off limits. The tours are only the following times Monday - Saturday 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m. Then on Sunday the tours are at 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m. see; http://www.derbymuseum.org/tours.html

Also - if you go to Churchill Downs - then one of the dusty cafes frequented by the track horsemen (and horsewomen) is Wagner's Pharmacy - see reviews on TA for more info...http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g39604-d609437-Reviews-Wagner_s_Pharmacy-Louisville_Kentucky.html Some scenes in the 2010 movie "Secretariat" were filmed at Wagner's.

And one more thought is to spend a night on a real working horse farm in Kentucky. Here is one website list (see link below) - and if you search the internet you'll find additional options for stays at horse farms around the Lexington area.... see: farmstayus.com/search#state=17&allow=1&page=1
