Baton Rouge Restaurant

We're coming from the midwest for our first visit ever to Baton Rouge this weekend and would like a recommendation for a moderately-priced restaurant. We'll have a group of six, including 2 teenagers, so preferably it would be some place with a variety of options though if that variety included some local southern or cajun-style food that would be great.

I'll defer to the local experts, but if seafood is OK with your party, you may like Parrain's, which is casual, but in my experience fairly tasty and has pretty typical South La. menu items. I also like Juban's and Mansour's, but they are a bit more upscale.

I gather there are now two locations for the Pastime. The only one I am familiar with is the original:

252 South Blvd

Baton Rouge, LA 70802

I absolutely loved eating at the Chimes when I was in Baton Rouge. Their crawfish etoufee is phenomenon and brunch is fantastic (go for the shrimp and grits). Half price oysters at Parrain's on Tuesday is great.

These are great suggestions. I would add Louie's to the list for breakfast or for for late-night burgers and Baton Rouge atmosphere. Its atmosphere is that of a dive. Lots of young people.

As you may be aware, this Saturday is Homecoming for LSU. This is bound to complicate everything. The game is 6pm on Saturday. Before people head to the game, lines can be long and your plans may have to be flexible. After about 5:30pm, you'll have the town to yourself for a few hours.

Have a great time!

Parrain's and The Chimes are both good choices. Both have a variety of options. I'd lean towards The Chimes because of your request for moderate pricing. Their location on Coursey will probably be less crowded than their Tigertown location.

Louie's has the best hash browns I've ever put in my mouth, but it's sure to be slammed this weekend, even at 3:00 in the morning.

I had to chuckle at Lisbette's comment about your having the town to yourself during the game. It's true. :-)

The Chimes and Parrain's have the same owners. I go to the Chimes a lot, sometimes just for beer--they have a great beer menu. But the food is good too, and my teenagers both like it. The Chimes East is definitely a better bet as far as crowds. Original location is right at the north gates of campus and it will be slammed all weekend probably. Even during the game--people who aren't going to the game will go there to watch. Also, you'll have a hard time parking. There's no free street parking during games, and the Chimes parking lot isn't very big.

Parrain's is one of my favorites. Never had a bad meal there.
