Where to stay?

We will be coming to BR around Memorial Day weekend for a bowling tournament downtown (I think it is at the Civic Center) I want to stay somewhere that offers a little bit of variety of things to do. I was thinking downtown would be a good idea but wasn't sure if the higher price was worth it? There are hotel 5-10 miles away that are less expensive but I wasn't sure if it would be better to stay outside the city or inside the city. Looking for a little variety maybe some restaurants or nice bar or shopping?

It's about 5 miles. Mostly interstate. The above hotels are just off I 10. It's a short drive maybe 10 minutes or so.

On Memorial Day Weekend, there is a large Bayou Country Music Festival in LSU Tiger Stadium so Baton Rouge will be very busy. If you're coming that weekend, I would stay downtown to be close to the River Center and for

convenience. I would look into the Sheraton there; I wouldn't think it would be as expensive as the Hilton but I'm not sure. There are lots of restaurants, bars, art galleries, and museums downtown now so I think you would enjoy that. The view of the Mississippi River from the top of the Shaw Center Art Museum is spectacular and not to be missed.

If you want to save some money, the hotels in the College Drive area would be less expensive but you would not have the same atmosphere as downtown. The hotels mentioned by Axle are on the service road running parallel to I-10. In this area, I always recommend Richmond Suites by Best Western. This property is on the other side of the interstate and closer to shopping, movies and better restaurants.

May is a nice time to be in Baton Rouge but it will be warm. Enjoy!

Second the Richmond Suites. It's a nice property if you're staying in the College/Corporate area. Mansur's is a good restaurant that's close by in the same area. But I'd suggest downtown for that weekend, too.
