Cajun Country for 1 week, need help!

We will be flying into New Orleans in May 2011 and would like to drive to Cajun cities and spend about 5 days. Any ideas of favorite places to visit and stay. What about one place and do day trips or move to new cities? We will do a few days in New Orleans as well.

Bon Jour, JeanneGirl:

If you are planning on visiting Cajun Country, you have come to right place! Lafayette is an easy drive from New Orleans (I strongly recommend taking the HWY 90 route -vs- I10, but we can discuss that as the dates get closer), and is the perfect 'jumping off' spot to visit all of the small towns/areas of Acadiana.

The fact that Lafayette is very central to all areas of Acadiana, has TONS of great places to eat, lots of live music venues, and a decent array of hotels to choose from, all combine to make it a great place to 'come home' to each day.

I might suggest you review some of the previous posts in this forum, as they give excellent advice/ideas of the places to see, restaurants, etc. After you have done so let us know any specific questions you may have and we will be glad to help you out.

Jeanne, which days of the week will you be in Cajun Country.? Much of the entertainment in that area is music, and the music scene is most active on weekends, from early Saturday morning until late Sunday night. My preliminary answer to your question about a central location would be Lafayette, with day trips to Breaux Bridge, St. Martinville, New Iberia, Eunice, and Mamou. Also, there are some excellent small-boat swamp tour operators near Henderson, which is about 20 minutes from Lafayette.

I would consider spending at least 2 nights in Lafayette.

I always recommend a visit to the Blue Moon Guest Hosue in Lafayettte, either to stay or to hear some live music.

You're not coming around May 1, by chance? That's when Lafayette hosts the Festival International de Louisiane, which draws huge crowds.

I'm not sure how long you're planning to be in New Orleans, but I think a week in Lafayette and the surrounding areas might be longer than you need. Like a previous poster mentioned, most of the music is on weekends, and during the week, the towns are pretty quiet. My husband and I were there for five days at Mardi Gras, and even during Carnival this was more than enough time.

There was a nice discussion on chowhound the other day about local restaurants/dives with great food in this area that may help.

I'm not an expert in this area but we do love Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge outside of Lafayette.

It would be very easy to spend 4-5 days in Acadiana.

The entire day Saturday would be taken up with music, starting at Fred's Lounge in Mamou early Saturday morning, hitting Savoy Music Center later in the morning, the show at the Liberty Theater later in the afternoon, and ending with dinner and music at a local restaurant, such as DIs.

After sleeping in a bit on Sunday morning, spend the afternoon and evening at McGee's landing and at Whiskey River Landing, listening and dancing to live music.

St. Martinville, New Iberia and Avery Island will take up most of a day.

Atchafalaya Basin small-boat swamp tour in the morning and Vermillionville in the afternoon will take up another day.
