driving from lafayette to natchez

Can someone please advise the best way to drive from Lafayette to Natchez tomorrow. Not sure whether we should drive up to Alexandria and across or over towards baton rouge and up. Also is there enough to see there for a couple of days or should we aim to spend a night in Jackson or Vicksburg.

I always go the Baton Rouge route and pass through St. Francisville, but that's just personal preference. As for Natchez, there are plenty of antebellum mansions to keep a person busy if that's your interest. I really don't find Jackson a pleasant place at all, so if I were going to split up my time, I'd choose Vicksburg but again, personal preference. I lived in Mississippi for most of my youth and still cringe when going visit friends around Jackson - and even they hate living there. The crime (especially car theft) is absurd in that area. Vicksburg and Natchez definitely are places of interest if you enjoy US history.

Going though Alex is usually faster as you get to avoid BR traffic. For a more interesting route if you have time, try the following:

I-10 from Laf. to Rosedale

LA 411 from Rosedale to Livonia

LA 78 from Livonia to False River (LA 1)

LA 1 to New Roads

turn L from LA 1 onto LA 10 in New Roads and follow it across the new Miss. bridge to St. Francisville (US 61)

Hwy 61 from St. Francisville to Natchez

There are some interesting plantation homes in the St. Francisville area.

Have a great trip.

Rosswood is a great B&B between Vicksburg and Natchez.

Rosswood Plantation @ 2513 Red Lick Road, Lorman, MS 601 - 437 - 4215.

I would definitely stop in Natchez and spend a day touring the plantation homes there. Monmouth is an oustanding place for the night. The dining room there is superb. I would also check out The Carriage House Restaurant at Stanton Hall for a wonderful lunch.

Here's a link to visiting the Delta. You would enjoy Natchez and Vicksburg. If you have time drive N on # 61 up to Clarksdale home of the blues. Good luck.

I like Hwy 61's route, especially thru Livonia, where you can stop to eat and Joe's. Tasty.
