plans for Dec 8-9

Me and my husband are staying in Bangor for the first time, and I was wondering whether there are any winter festivities/events in the nearby towns this coming weekend. We are gonna drive to Acadia and see what we can, but I know that it's not much this time of the year.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

On Friday, December 7th, Bar Harbor is having their Midnight Madness sale - the last sale event of the year. A lot of shops will be open until midnight. Saturday, December 8th is the kick off of 12 Days of Shopping and Dining locally with a bunch of sales and special promotions.

Be sure to pick up a winter use map of Acadia. Only a small portion (about 4 miles) of the Park Loop Road is open and it only accessible via Schooner Head Road in Bar Harbor. Acadia is an hour drive from Bangor. It starts getting dark by 3:30 so plan ahead to get the most of your day in Acadia. The hiking trails and carriage roads are all open if the weather is pleasant.

Truly -- be sure you figure out how to get on the part of the Loop Road that is open in the winter. You'll get to see Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, the sheer side of Mount Champlain, and the Beehive. Don't just drive around the village of Bar Harbor. Get into the Park ! A stop at Sherman's Bookstore on Main Street will get you directions to how to get into the Park. Or you can find the winter headquarters of the Park on Eagle Lake Road, Route 233 just three miles west of the village of Bar Harbor. There is another winter access into the Park from Seal Harbor. You'll get to drive to Jordan Pond where you will have access to the carriage roads and the post card view from the Jordan Pond House tea lawn to the mountains.

It really is a good weekend to head to the island. The shopping is fun. You can still access trails and what not from certain areas. An easy access point is from Eagle lake road at the Eagle lake parking area. Very refreshing.

Bangor is pretty straight forward this time of year. Shopping. Be prepared for traffic issues around the mall. This past weekend was the festival of lights parade, but downtown should still be light up nicely. There are some new restaurants downtown for diverse tastes of food and brew. I'm a new convert to Geaghans own brew. They are located next to the casino.
