Is it advisable to do grocery shopping before arriving on a Saturday morning. We will be arriving from south of Portland.
I was just thinking that the supermarket might be extremely crowded on the weekend when people are just coming in for their week's vacation and everyone is trying to shop at about the same time.
We've never been annoyed by crowds at that store. (At least, no more or less than other stores.) We camp in that area two or three times each summer and shop there every time.
I don't think you need to be concerned, but since you're coming from south of Portland, there are other options along the way.
If you're foodies, there is a Whole Foods just off I-295 exit 7 in Portland.
There is a large Shaw's just off I-295 exit 20 in Freeport. You probably know Freeport is very touristy in the summer, but this is the southern end of town and not a problem to get around. The store is almost new and I've never seen it crowded. Are you stopping for breakfast along the way? If so, consider taking exit 17 (Yarmouth/Freeport) off I-295 and eating at the Café at the Freeport Inn on Route One, just after the Muddy Rudder restaurant. Excellent and inexpensive breakfasts. Then you'd just hop back in the car and continue up Route One a couple of miles and you could stop at the Shaw's or just get back on I-295 at mile 20.
Thanks Downeast; When going to the Outer Banks in the past we were always advised to shop before arriving or wait until Monday because checkout lines were so long.
