Any Suggestions for Quoody Loop Area in August

We will be staying at an RV park in Harrington for six days. I pretty well have activities planned for Acadia Park area but would like to visit the area east of there for a couple of days and would appreciate any info regarding sights to visit in the Eastport/Lubec area. I have looked thru the Maine forum here and checked on the web but would really like to here from anyone who has visited or has knowledge of this area.

Thanks.

Lubec is the gateway to Campobello Island. Campobello is the site of the F.D. Roosevelt compound, which now is part of an international park. Campobello is also the site of one of the two Quoddy Lighthouses (the other is just outside of Lubec). Quoddy Head State Park, just south of Lubec has a number of interesting trails in addition to West Quoddy Light.

Caveat: due to the heightened interest in security, if you cross over to Campobello, you should be carrying your passport in order to return.

Hi MGator,

I lived in Eastport for a few years and know the area pretty well. What is it that you are looking to do? Also as mentioned if you have a passport, you may also want to consider Campobello, or St. Andrews as a side trip.

If going to Eastport there are whale watching and fishing excursions via the Harris Family and it is a nice way to see the bay. http://www.eastportwindjammers.com/

Be sure to hit up Rayes mustard, the last stone ground Mustard mill in the US, and the best mustard you'll ever taste. http://www.rayesmustard.com/

Rosies Hot Dogs is an institution loved by locals.

Other than that, walking around and enjoying a more laid back atmosphere. The sights are great and the city is quite walkable. There is an old fort behind the HS from the battle of 1812. There is also several art galleries and museums. Be sure to go out to Dog Island and see the Old Sow which is the largest whirlpool in the western hemisphere.

There is a nice Hiking trail that is easy to hike located at Shackfords head with some great views of the bay, Treats Island, Lubec and Campobello.

Also be sure to check out the Eastport Chowder house which has a working Lobster pound and is located in a converted sardine factory overlooking the bay.

This website is a not flashy, but does provide alot of info on the area.

Thank you cw and carolyn for your replies. The caveat re having our passports was appreciated since I hadn't thought of that. The websites and info about Eastport sights like Rayes mustard and Rosies Hot Dogs were the type of suggestions I wouldn't find on any website. Looking forward to visiting Maine....will file a trip report when we return in late August.

Thank you again for your responses.

It always makes me chuckle that down here in NH and MA we have to go out on a boat pretty far from shore to go Whale watching and in Eastport you can watch them for free from land.

The people at the Seaview are very nice. Did you have one of their supper or breakfast buffets?
