Next Years Vacation

We are from Australia and will be visiting the N.E. from end of Sep next year. Can any poster tell us (a) when is optimum time for fall foliage (b) where can inexpensive accommodation be found ( our needs are principally a place to eat, sleep and use a base for travel within the region)

The optimum time for foliage on the coast of Maine is around the second week in October---it changes from year to year, of course, but that's a pretty good rule of thumb. farther north it peaks earlier, and farther south it peaks later.

New England is a fairly large area and if you are going to be touring the entire area you are going to need several places to stay. Most areas have chain motels to accommodate budget travelers, so that probably won't be an issue. In terms of driving times/distances, here are a few examples:

New York City to Hartford, Connecticut: 2 hours

Hartford Connecticut to Boston: 2 hours

Hartford Connecticut to the White Mountains (New Hampshire):3.5 hours

Boston Massachusetts to Portland Maine: 2 hours (100 mies)

Portland Maine to the White Mountains: 1.5-2 hours

Portland Maine to upstate Vermont: 3 hours

Portland Maine to Acadia National Park (Maine: 3+ hours

These are based on expressway driving without stopping.......you will probably take a lot longer since you a sightseeing. So I think the thing to do is to choose a few bases of operation, stay in those areas, and do day trips from your bases. Either that or slowly progress from one area to another and leave your car at the other end.
