Columbus day weekend trip

My husband and I are driving up from Connecticut on Saturday

October 6th and spending two nights at the Katahdin Shadows

motel. We plan to drive to Baxster state Park early Sunday morning.

Does anyone know how early we should arrive at the gate?

If we don't get a pass for Roaring Brook , how hard will it be to

get a pass for the Daicey Pond or Kidney Pond area parking?

I assume we have to tell the ranger exactly where we are going.

We will have our kayaks with us. Can anyone suggest the best

place to use them?

Where outside of the park is there good kayaking ( good scenery

and possible moose sightings)

Also, since the moose seem to know that it is hunting season,

do they also know that there is no hunting in Baxster State park?

Silly question I guess, but here in Connecticut, when turkey hunting

season opens, we always have lots of turkeys in our backyard.

They seem to know that they are safe there! I am hoping the

moose will all be in Baxster hiding out.

How are the colors in the area today, October 2nd?

Thank you for any advice.

Not sure if you caught the recent post about the long lines at the Baxter gate at 0530am but that should give you a good idea of how busy it could be, even more so for the holiday weekend. Moose hunting season is a two week split season. It was open last week, it is closed this week, and opens up again next Monday 10-8. I think you can kayak right from your motel if you wanted to. Colors should be really good this weekend, even though we have been having warmer than normal weather lately, the leaves are changing I beleive that far north they should be 75% or better by this weekend based on the news reports lately.
