Recommendation on a 4-6 hour drive in North Maine Woods

Hi,

We, 2 families with 4 kids aged 2-7, from Connecticut, have planned to spend this Memorial day weekend in the Millinocket-Baxter SP area. We are staying in Millinocket and will be spending Saturday and Sunday in Millinocket and Baxter State Park. We have budgeted 4-6 hours on Monday (weather forecast seems nice) for a long drive (some stop and see) in the area north of the Baxter State Park.

I am looking for recommendations on some nice drives in this area. We have never been up this north, and would like to see some country/landscape that is representative of this part.

Please help.

Thanks,

Vivek

You could take the 95 up to Houlton - then proceed WEST to Presque Isle OR Ft. Kent. Really BEAUTIFUL country AND along the way there is a miniature Solar System w/Planets to stop at & take pics. Give you a real feel of the "County"! Farms/Mars Hill Wind Mills - Amish Communities - a real slice of Northern Maine life! Antique shops too! Any more ?? fire away - have a GREAT visit!

Thanks a lot katahdincabins (as always :-).

1. Is it worth coming back via Ashland? Anything worth seeing? It is 45 minutes extra drive.

2. Anything to see/do in the towns of Presque Isle/Ashland?

3. Any recommendation in Presque Isle for lunch?

Sorry did not get back to you sooner, really busy w/upgrades around here, softball, dance...and on & on. Anyways, you may find the drive back via Ashland just more of the same. In our case it would depends on how hyped up the kids are - know what I mean? Presque Isle has the BEAUTIFUL Heritage Nordic Center - has amazing trails for x-country skiing in the winter OR walking (lite sure but AMAZING views) in the summer. Stop by & take a look - as far as restaurants go - nice chinese place near the Wal-Mart Supercenter - antique shops downtown AND a movie theater (not sure what is playing though!). Have a great trip - AND - if you have the time - the road to ROARING BROOK is now OPEN at BSP. 8 miles up from the park entrance - STRONGLY suggest driving up there & walking/hiking just about 1/2 MILE on a flat easy trail to the turnout on the left to Sandy Stream Pond. That is where the MOOSE usually are this time of year and if clear enough AMAZING views of Katahdin. Let us know how it went!
