Possibly relocating to Portland, scouting trip coming up

Hello all,

I hope to get some of the info that would make a person love to move to Portland. We live in FL, but we used to live in New England two years ago. We miss the scenery and the interaction with people. We have been to Maine, but not to Portland. We LOVE food, and enjoy cultural highlights of every city we have lived in. Please let us know if you have recommendations on where to stay, eat, drink; and get the true essence of the city.

If you love food, Portland will suit you will. Past threads on this forum will give you a sense of the variety of restaurants available; also, check out the Portland Food Map at

Our favorite place to stay is the Portland Regency, one of several hotels in the Old Port area.. I don't know if Old Port captures the essence of the city, but it certainly has its charm.

When we took our "scouting trip" 10 years ago we stayed at Inn at Park Spring, a friendly spot in the heart of downtown with very knowledgeable and helpful hosts.

Walk around the Old Port and along the "working waterfront". Take a ferry to Peaks Island; visit Fort Williams (Cape Elizabeth). Take in the Portland Art Museum, Maine History Museum/Longfellow House, and the First Friday Art Walk. Check out a Seadogs (AAA baseball) or Pirates (AHL Hockey) game; or a concert at the intimate One Longfellow Square.

Portland is a city on a human scale...as urban/cosmopolitan an experience as you want it to be and 10 minutes from beaches, woods, hiking trails, etc.

Many great dining spots...too many to mention. A favorite coffee bar is Arabica on Free St. If beer is an interest...try Gritty's or Sebago Brew Pubs or take the Shipyard tour.

Have fun.
