Suggestions for Romantic Dinner

My husband and I are traveling to Portland for a few nights for our first anniversary. This will be our first time there. I'm looking for restaurant suggestions for dinner on our actual anniversary night. I'd prefer to go somewhere a bit on the formal side. We are staying at Inn by the Bay. We'd appreciate any thoughts! Thanks!

There are many great places in town. You could start by looking at Five Fifty Five and Back Bay Grill

Very few of even the "high-end" restaurants are what I'd consider formal. The one that stands out for this request is Back Bay Grill.

It is a nice, intimate "special occasion" restaurant w/ excellent food, wine, and service.

If you're up for a ferry ride you might consider Diamond's Edge Restaurant on Great Diamond Island. The Casco Bay Lines ferries run there and it's a lovely spot with both indoor and outdoor seating on the lawn.

Check out Grace. It's an old church - beautiful inside. I've been for drinks but have never eaten there. Reviews are good.

Grace is not good...different atmosphere but food is average at best.

20 Milk St. at the Regency is nice. We had our anniversary dinner there last year. They seated us at the table in the bump out, a turret of sorts, with windows around - very nice. The food was very good. The bar downstairs is intimate - except during happy hour when it is a bit noisy with the after work crowd.

Thank you! We were actually planning on stopping in Grace for a drink.

Pegoode - I'll look into 20 Milk St. Thanks!

After researching and your suggestions we had decided on BBG - then when I went to call for reservations I found out they are closed on Sundays! We then started to think about Five Fifty Five or Fore Street. Any thoughts on either of those? I also heard Front Room is good but I'm not sure if that will be a good spot for an anniversary dinner.

Front Room too noisy/cramped for special dinner.

Of your narrowed list I'd go w/ 555.
