Good prices for lobsters

I'll be in the area next week, Portland, Old Orchard Beach, Scarbough, perhaps as far north as Freeport. I keep reading how cheap lobsters are with the glut but the retail prices that I'm seeing don't reflect that glut. The cheapest soft shell is $4.99 a pound. About the same I paid 2 years ago. Forget about hard shell prices! Any suggestions? I've check all the retail places in the harbor and obvious places and they were all high. Nancy's Lobster's were the best but she's out of business. Any idea's?

The prices you hear in the news are the prices paid to the Lobsterman, it doesn't necessarily reflect the retail prices or the restaurant prices. Typically the cheapest places are Grocery stores or working Lobster piers. You've asked the question in multiple areas in the Maine forum so I am not quite sure where you are headed or what town to help you with.

Here is a story that has some prices in the Greater Portland area.

Thanks Carolyn_joe. I posted in other forums thinking not everyone visits all the Maine forums. I'll be in Freeport, Portland and Old Orchard Beach and points inbetween. I'm reading more and you are correct. Off the boat prices are El Cheapo and it's the lobstermen that are suffering. I lucked out one year and just happened to be on a pier in OOB and purchased right off the boat for $2.50 a pound but that was about 8 years ago. I'm never there when the boats come in. In past years I found the opposite at the grocery stores. The prices are usually higher. I appreciate your comments!

Harbor Fish Market on Commercial St. currently has chix for $3.99/lb. That's the same as my local fish market has been selling them. My local Hannaford on the other hand has them at $5.99/lb. So a little cheaper right now at the fish market.

I saw 3.79 per pound on West Comercial St today. But remember dealer price and boat price are totally different. Dealers pay 2.50 a pound to lobsterman, ten turn around and sell to the public and add for size, hard shell, ....essentially driving th price up. Soft shells maybe on the way out as they shed a bit early this year.

Thank you all for your help! Hopefully someone else will also benefit from your good advice! I'm on my way to Maine today and will post back with what I found. Of course, we all know that prices can change on a daily basis but I have good leads. Thanks again!!
