First trip to Maine

We are flying to Boston and spending the weekend with friends in Cape Cod. We will then drive up to Maine for a few days and fly back to Texas out of Boston. Would love some help on itinerary, things to do, places to stay. Don't have a clue right now. Should we target Portland, go up to Rockland or somewhere else?

Info for you to help us. We are a very active couple in our 60's. Love vacation rental but a B&B might be better as to meet other travelers. Love beach. My husband would like to do a sail trip if we could find one.

We have 3-4 nights to travel. Depending whether we need to head back to Boston on the night before our 10am flight...

TIA, Ellen

"Vacation rental" for "a few days" could be problematic -- most of them I'm aware of in coastal locations rent for a full week at a time.... not sure you'll have much luck finding one for less time than that. Portalnd or Rockland could both give you great experiences -- one is a small-ish city, the other a good-sized coastal town. Portland has a revitalized Old Port District with some graet shops and superb restaurants along cobblestone/brick sidewalks, some great walking trails, a proximity to Portland Head Light lighthouse, and multiple opportunities to take a Casco Bay Lines ferry to one of the local islands (lots of folks like to ride out to Peak's Island and spend the day walking around the island road system and grabbing lunch on the island). Rockland and nearby Camden offer a better chance to get closer to the water and waterfront (Portland's tends to be more "commercial" and less accessible). Numerous get-on-the-water opportunities in Camden Harbor -- the tour operators have their tables/booths set up on a daily basis. Nearby Camden Hills State Park has a variety of hiking trails, Rockland offers a chance to walk/hike to the end of it's mile-long harbor breakwater to see the lighthouse (exterior only) at it's end. The Owl's Head Transportation Museum (if it moves, they have one) and world-famous Farnsworth Art Museum are both nearby. And Rockland is getting a destination as a great "foodie" destination. Either could make a great destination for you -- one more small-city-like, the other two nearby small-town experiences.

Thank you so much, MainerOnTheGo! We have made reservations at the Cape Arundel Inn in Kennebunkport based on a friends recommendation. Very excited! Any ideas on what to do from there. We will be there three nights.

From your Inn it's an easy day drive into Portland, visit Portland Headlight and Fort Williams Park then have lunch in the old port. Or, for lunch take a drive out to Two Lights State park which is about 20-25 mins from Portland and a world away. www.lobstershacktwolights.com

Maine is more rocky shore than beach, but you do have Goose Rocks Beach not far from Arundel. Also, visit Cape Porpoise for lunch one day, or maybe a day trip down to Ogunquit if the traffic isn't too bad (not sure when your visit is.)

For a sail trip, check with Captain Rich:

Day-trip to Portland would definitely be do-able.....see suggestoins for Portland "to-do" in Item 1 above.... You could also check out the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk (can be Googled for more info)..... or take a ride down to York Beach (one of the real sand beaches in Maine) and see The Nubble Lighthouse (nice photo-op) while you're there. I either of you have history interests, the summer retreat of President George Bush (Bush I) is in Kennebunkport -- you can't really "visit" it, but you can get a nice view of it from Ocean Avenue -- should be literally "right around the corner" from where you're staying. You're also going to be quite close to St. Anne's Episcopal Church -- a nice stone church immediately adjacent to the shore, with stone chapel, lush gardens and an outdoor chapel -- great spot for just enjoying the architecture, the gardens and the view. Last I knew, the church grounds were open to the public every day during the summer. Am sure your innkeeper will also have some great suggestions for you.
