Driving From Boston to Maine in August

We are leaving Boston on Thursday morning (8/6) and need to be back by Monday afternoon. Our original thought was Bar Harbor, but we are having trouble finding a place to stay that is under 150 and not already booked. We thought of Bar Harbor as we like having so much to do close by (ie, Acadia Nat'l Park AND the ocean) but are up for entertaining other options with similar attractions.

Any suggestions on places to stay on the way up? Or in Southwest Harbor? Or Bar Harbor? Elsewhere?

Here's a suggested itinerary to explore along the coast:

Thursday drive to Kennebunkport Maine and tour the harbor/Dock square area, ride out to see the Bush compound at Walker Point. Continue north and stop for shopping at LL Bean and overnight in or around Freeport.

Friday morning drive up to Bar Harbor and enjoy the park. Stop at Jordan Pond House for late afternoon tea in the garden. Drive up to see the sunset from the top of Cadillac Mtn. Enjoy the coast and park again on Sat.

Sun morning ride down along the coast, stopping at Camden to stretch your legs and enjoy the beautiful harbor area there. Consider overnighting around the Boothbay Harbor area - arguably one of Maine's most scenic. Explore the coastline - Pamaquid, Popham Beach, etc. Overnight in the area.

It's another 3 to 4 hours to Boston on Monday. Portsmouth NH is a good mid-day stop to explore the Prescott PArk gardens and step in for lunch and a brew at Ri Ra's Irish pub in Market Square.

You must not be looking in the right places for a place to stay in Bar Harbor, not already booked and under $150.

I see that both Anne's White Columns and Hearthside Bed and Breakfast have two rooms that fit the bill. They are both quite nice places right in the middle of the village. Try searching at sleepbarharbor.com. They have the prices, amenities, and availability listed for quite a few Bed and Breakfast inns in the area.

If you don't do Bed and Breakfast, try the less expensive, family-owned motels just outside of Bar Harbor like Highbrook or Edenbrook motels.
