Day around Waterville

Our son will be spending a day at Colby College later in July.

How would you recommend we spend the day after dropping him off? Are there any lakes/beaches/scenic hikes within a 1 hour drive?

How about interesting towns/shopping?

The Belgrade Lakes are nearby, within 20 minutes or so. Sunset Camps has a little public beach area but it will be mostly children. Nearby there is an ice cream and lobster roll shanty, very good. I would probably drive out to Sunset Camps where you'll be able to park and use the bathrooms just by paying the nominal beach fee....then hike around the lake and enjoy a lobster roll on the deck. I'm sure the employees at Sunset will have some good advice for a hike.

A hike around the Colby campus and the art museum there would be another suggestion, maybe followed by the Redington Museum in downtown Waterville (not sure of their summer hours). Ice Cream nearby at North Street Dairy, maybe lunch at the Riverside Market which is a short drive along the river.

Thanks for the advice. We ended up traveling to Belfast, which is a quaint little seaside town not too far away. The Colby campus is indeed beautiful (and the Art museum remarkable) but we needed to get away from that for a while.
