Things to do in April

My family has decided to spend a week in York Maine in mid-April. What attractions are open? Are there any places to hike nearby?

In mid April many of the beach area attractions aren't open along the seacoast yet. But it's a great time to walk the beach and the kids have the whole place to play (football, wiffle ball, sandcastles if it's warm enough). And for hiking you can go to Mt. Agamenticus in York, or Fort Foster in Kittery. Depending on the ages of your children, the Childrens Museum in Portsmouth is lots of fun for the younger ones (under 8 ?) Not sure if any of the whale watch boats are running yet. And Portland has some museums and is nice to walk around the port area.

York is nice any time of year....that's why I live here :)

Where are you staying?

In mid-April there won't be much open. The stores at Short Sands Beach are closed, except for perhaps on weekends. The York Wild Kingdom is probably closed too. The beaches are York's most wonderful resource, and you might want to walk along the Fisherman's walk . You can walk along the cliff walk all the way to Hancock Wharf. Mt. Agamenticus, about 800 feet, is a nice hike in York. From the top you can see the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west. Ogunquit, about 7 or 8 miles north of York has some interesting shops that might be open. The Marginal Way is a great coastal walk. Portsmouth, NH, about 7-8 miles south of York has shops and restaurants, and you could walk around the Strawbery Banke area.

If you are there a whole week, then also range as far north as Portland (and Freeport). Maybe visit the Portland Museum of Art.
