Hotel advice while visiting NIH

My daughter needs to do some research at the NIH library for a few days and so will be flying from CA in a couple weeks. She wants to use the metro to get from the hotel to the library. Any ideas where she can stay that is safe, easily accesible to the metro and on a student budget? Nothing fancy, just clean and safe. Thanks.

What is her actual student budget and dates she'll be coming? A hotel that's an easy walk to a Metro stop in Bethesda or Rockville may well be outside of her budget.

If she's willing to consider a hotel with its own shuttle bus or along a local bus route to a Metro station, there are plenty of possibilities towards the lower end of the budget scale.

More info please?

She's arriving Sunday March 22 and leaving that Thurs. Something under $200 would be best. It looks like the metro doesn't go directly to NIH anyway. Is there a hotel along a busline that goes to NIH from Silver Spring or Wheaton or elsewhere that's not too far? Thanks for your input : )

For a hotel walking distance to a Red Line station, the only one I'm seeing in your price range is the Rockville Hilton at $199, located directly next to the Twinbrook station (ten minute ride to NIH).

There is direct Metrobus service from downtown Silver Spring to NIH (J1/J2 buses) for a 25-minute trip to NIH. The Hilton there has an advance-payment special of $149 and the Crowne Plaza is $172. The other recommendable hotel in downtown Silver Spring (Courtyard) is >$200. Stay away from the Comfort Inn, Travelodge and Days Inn.

An answer to a question you didn't ask: She will find a lot to do in her downtime (if she has any) without a car so far as shopping, restaurants of all cuisines in every price range, and entertainment within the immediate vicinity of the Rockville Hilton and the downtown Silver Spring hotels (but the edge definitely goes to Rockville on this one).

There are quite a few clean & safe places in the $100 range in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area that aren't near the Metro, but they may offer a free shuttle service. The downside for the substantial savings here is a) additional time for not only the shuttle, but a longer Metro ride as well, and b) while these hotels are located in safe office-park environments, there are few if any amenities in the immediate vicinity for somebody who doesn't have a car.

Incidentally, the Metro does go to NIH. The Medical Center stop is two blocks from the NIH Library.
