travelling from iad to frostburg

Can anyone tell me what is the best and quickest way to travel from washington Dulles airport to frostburg on sunday 16/Jan /11. I will be staying in a hotel at the airport and travelling on to frostburg state university. I cannot find any clear connections on the net. Also what is the weather like at this time of year.

rent a car. Frostberg is located in the middle of nowhere--- and then you take a left. No public transportation option that is remotely reasonable.

Weather will be cold with chance of snow but too far out to say anything more specific.

Frostburg is a small town, located about 15 miles west of a larger town called "Cumberland". Frostburg's climate is slightly colder than Cumberland as it's at a higher elevation. I visited its university, last spring. You can get weather forecasts here http://www.weather.com or http://www.weather.gov or http://www.weather.yahoo.com The postal zip-code of Frostburg is 21532.

A rental car is almost essential, as using public transport would require several transfers, occupying a full day. I would recommend driving Route 7 from IAD through Leesburg to Winchester, then motorway I-81 North to motorway I-70 at Hagerstown, then I-68 West to Cumberland and Frostburg. Avoid any minor roads, as they are much slower.

Hi guys thank you so much for the replies, Im afraid I won't be in a position to rent a car so I will have to try and make my way by public transport. If I could get as far as Cumberland maybe I could get a taxi from there to frostburg??. Would it be possible to make a connection to cumberland if I went into Washington from the airport

If you have an international drivers license, and are over age 21, the "Dollar" or "Thrifty" car-rental agencies, which service IAD, should accommodate you. http://rentalcars.com/airport/iad Other car-rental companies require customers to be at least age 25. Just be careful to drive on the right side of roads in America.

Otherwise, you can use public transit as follows:

1) Take a Taxi from IAD directly to Union Station in Washington DC. (Or alternatively, save a few dollars by riding a taxi from IAD to "West Falls Church" Metrorail station and then metrorail (subway) to Metro Center station, then a second train one more mile to Union Station. But this would be more complicated).

2) Board an Amtrak train bound for Chicago http://www.amtrak.com and get off at Cumberland, Maryland. The last part of the ride may be very slow around winding mountain curves.

3) Take a local Bus from Cumberland to Frostburg http://www.gov.allconet.org, (depending on the time of day), or else take a Taxi to Frostburg.

One more thought: You could also take a Taxi from IAD to Silver Spring Amtrak station, instead of to Washington Union Station. Either way, your taxi fare cost is about $60 according to http://www.taxifare.com . I think Chicago bound trains, just after leaving Washington Union Station, stop at Silver Spring as well, and it's a much smaller building and more relaxing that Union Station. You could verify this first, at http://www.amtrak.com . Make a note of the station's exact address, to tell your taxi driver.

I am guessing this is not the first time this issue has arisen for someone trying to get to Frostburg. Call the college for advise. Start with the admissions office.

Not sure about IAD, but BWI has just started a shuttle service to Western MD
