Visiting National Seashore logisics

There are a couple ranger-led activities that we would like to do in Eastham. The first one starts at 9:30 and says to call ahead for a parking space. That sounded great to me with all I've read about parking. We are also interested in the Penniman house in the afternoon and the Salt Pond Visitor Center later that morning.. Can we walk to the Penniman House with parking at the Visitors Center? What about lunch? I would assume we would want to pack a lunch. Would there be somewhere along the way from Falmouth to stop early (8:30ish) to get a sandwich or picnic somewhere? Any recommendations? Thank you!

The Penniman House is on Fort Hill Rd which is not is the same lot as the Salt Pond Visitor's Center. Fort Hill area is a few miles before the Visitor's Center. You can get lunch at many places on your way. There is a Box Lunch sandwich place on Rt. 6 right before the visitor's center. Any of the supermarkets also have pre-made food to throw together a picnic.

Leaving from Falmouth, figure how long you think it will take to drive, and then pad some more time into it. Traffic in summer is unpredictable. It might take an hour on Rt. 6 or 2 hours on Rt. 28. www.nps.gov/caco/upload/WebJulyAugust.pdf

Thanks. I forgot about grocery stores. That's a good idea. What's the parking like at the Fort Hill area? And do the early birds have a better chance beating the traffic?

I don't recall any problem parking at Ft Hill for the tour inside the Penniman house. Also, you can visit one of the restaurants in the area, you don't have to pack a lunch. Arnolds is popular.

There are two small public lots for parking in the Fort Hill Area. The first lot is just past the Penniman House on your left. The second lot is at the top of Fort Hill. Since the Park Service limits the number of people who take the tour at the Penniman House, you should be able to get a spot in the first lot if you sign up for a tour (Mon and Sat mornings 11:00-12:00). If you just want to browse the house on your own (Tues-Thu 1:00-4:00) you will have to take your chances for parking. Try to plan some additional time to walk the Area, with breathtaking views of Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic, but remember that there are also two Private homes in the Fort Hill Area (one is a the Fort Hill B+B directly across from the Penniman House) so please be respectful and park only in the designated public lots.

You can not walk between the Visitor's Center and Fort Hill Area.

For a picnic lunch you can stop at the Superette, at Windmill Green on Rt 6, across from Town Hall in Eastham. They have great deli and will make you a sandwich to go. Then you can head up to the Visitor's Center and have your lunch as you look out over Salt Pond....or drive a bit further toward Coast Guard Beach and have a picnic at the Doane Picnic Area. There is a Stop and Shop in Orleans just past the Orleans/Eastham rotary if you decide to go the grocery store route for lunch.
