Hi, I think you could probably get the actual milage to the Lakes from mapquest. Hancock is about 2 1/2 hours to a Massachusetts ocean beach. You have your pick of North Shore, South Shore, Cape Cod and around the Westport area. I would not think that this would be an easy daytrip. Closer may be a Connecticut Beach - Hammonasset comes to mind. www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325210 As for things to do, a lot depends on when you are going to be visiting - if it from mid-June to Labor Day there is a very lively arts scene in the Berkshires - Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra www.bos.org Theater, dance, etc. Here is a good overall web site for the Berkshires:

Two hours from Hancock can get you several nice day trips in any direction. A nice loop through southern Vermont and NH on one day to explore the country side. A drive to the CT wine trail is another option. Some of the activities will depend on the time of year.

Mount Greylock State Reservation*

30 Rockwell Rd.

Lanesborough, MA 01237

mass.parks@state.ma.us

State's highest point with panoramic views of five states; 45 miles of trails. Massachusetts' first state park; 2.5 mile strenuous hike to 35 campsites (no car camping). Inspirational location for Herman Melville and Henry David Thoreau

We took some beautiful shore hikes when we went to Hancock, there is one here that you can see 5 states from the highest peak, beautiful anytime of year.

Also there is one of the only natural marble waterfalls in the United States nearby. I don't have the location.

These are fun and promote wellbeing. Breathing in the fresh air is energizing in itself.

Natural Bridge State Park see the white marble 550 million year old white marble dam. Explore amazing natural sites, not commercial sites.

Natural Bridge State Park

McCauley Road, off Rte. 8

P.O. Box 1757, North Adams 01247

(413) 663-6392

(413) 663-8469 (off-season)

Discover a geologic wonder at this 48 acre park. Examine the only naturally formed white marble arch and man-made white marble dam in North America, and tour an abandoned marble quarry. The "natural bridge" for which the park is named, according to geologists, is 550 million year old bedrock marble, carved into an arch by the force of glacial melt water over 13,000 years ago; one of the best places in New England to demonstrate the effects of glaciation. The bridge spans rushing Hudson Brook as it twists and tumbles through a steep 60-foot deep gorge.

Noted Romantic writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne, visited here in 1838 and recorded his experience about Hudson's Cave (or Falls) in An American Notebook "The cave makes a fresh impression on me every time I visit it ... so deep, so irregular, so gloomy, so stern." The site was an active commercial quarry from 1810 to 1947, producing coarse-grained white marble used in local buildings and cemeteries. From 1950 to 1983 it was a privately-owned and popular roadside tourist attraction off the Mohawk Trail. Natural Bridge became a state park in 1985, to preserve its unique geologic features.
