Meeru in June

If I am planning a trip to Meeru in June and staying in a water villa, is the water deep or shallow?? Are the currents strong?? Read the other threads and seem like there isn't much snorkelling at Meeru. I suppose you see fishes just not much corals??

Hi

Meeru has poor snorkeling compared to other Maldives islands with good house reefs but this doesn't mean a first timer to the Maldives won't be amazed at what they see . yes you will see fish, sharks, rays and so on, you just won't have a Coral reef and the veriatty of fish associated with one.

The time of year you go won't have any influence on the depth of the water around your water Vila but it will influence the currents and how calm the sea may be on any given day.

The ocean should always be treated with respect and currents can be anywhere at any time of year . Check out the FAQs for tips on safe snorkeling :-)

Good luck

The water around Meeru is mostly shallow bar the sand dredged area on the east of the island and the southern channel. It's the north end of the island where there are the strongest currents and care should be taken. Although no reef around the island there is still an abundance of life in the water with excellent dive sites close by. The glass bottom boat is also well worth a trip where they take over the nearby 'house' reef which is incredible. Remember there are also daily snorkelling trips for a few dollars to the house reef. As an experienced diver I've never got bored at Meeru on both our trips there.

On the other hand Meeru is a stunning island, amazing food with top class service.

Cheers

I think the word 'poor' is used too frequently on this forum. Meeru doesn't have a house reef off the shore but certainly has lots of sharks, stingrays, and fish and the first time visitor would be amazed.

The island itself is beautiful and the lagoon is great, there are however quite strong currents near the water villas but is clearly marked on the map where not to Snorkel.

I would describe poor snorkeling as Spain or turkey, meeru is another level just not the best in the Maldives

I'd say...

Poor - no Coral, barely any marine life

Average - mostly dead Coral, some marine life

Good - some live Coral, lots of marine life

Excellent - lots of live Coral, lots of varied marine life

Top rated - masses of Coral, huge variety and quantity of marine life.

I'm glad you asked Darryl,

I'm going to give it a 2 on the KennySnorkel Scale.

Current league table of my islands goes:

Komandoo: Excellent

Kuredu: Good

Meeru: Average

Paradise Island: Poor to Average
