I have another question. Is Edgartown a better choice than Oak Bluffs for relaxding on the beach? Would you recommend the Harbor View Hotel over Oak Bluffs' Oak Bluffs Inn?
Oak Bluffs is a lot more happening!!
I would stay there..Edgartown is quieter, more residential, you need some mode of tranportation.
Oak Bluffs is better to walk around ane see things.
The Harbor View is probably more expensive then the Oak Bluffs Inn but it is directly across the road from Lighthouse Beach which you can walk to.
The Oak Bluffs Inn is probably 1/4 mile from a smallish beach.
The nicest beach is State Beach which is between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs but you'd need some sort of transportation to get there.. car or bike.
Both towns are nice to walk around in, each has it's own charm and appeal. Good restaurants in both. Oak Bluffs is more party then Edgartown.
pjmarv, You're comparing apples to oranges here. There are many differences. The Edgartown beach is at the opening of the harbor, and a five minute walk from the Harborview, down a sandy path then around the lighthouse. Many use it for strolling, some for relaxing. South beach is the large Atlantic ocean beach that many Edgartown vacationers use. For a quiet, mellow experience or if you have small children, the lighthouse beach might be preferred.
The town beach in Oak Bluffs will have many more people. It is a three block walk, about 5-10 minutes, from The Oak Bluffs Inn. It is also a quiet, mellow harbor beach with few waves.
To compare the two places you mentioned for accommodations, is tough. The Harborview is a hotel with 130 guest rooms, restaurant and pool. The Oak Bluffs Inn is a nine guest room Inn. It all depends on what you want. One is good for some, but not for others. I suggest you read the reviews and look at the websites for both locations.
I would choose Edgartown, I just like the place better than Oak Bluffs
I would also prefer Edgartown myself. Its more quaint! If I were you, visit both areas! Why not, the bus fares are very cheap. I also have to agree about the beach on the Atlantic side..its gorgeous!!!
State Beach which is between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown is very nice for relaxing on, the surf is calm, the beach is nice.
South Beach on the south side of the Island has heavy surf and big waves... the beach itself is gorgeous.
Go to both if you get the chance.
Oak Bluffs is known for local junkies and working class residences. And to us, it is the last choice as a full time residence. But I found it interesting that youngsters like this town. It is still the secondary setting to me as it is too noisy and too crude, young kids acting out at summer nights. The crowds are not definitely the ones you imagine when you think of MV.
Edgartown is upperscale residence areas and buildings are really well-maintained but it is not for young kids with bar hopping, it is for the mature groups but it is closer to the south beach and the better dining choices. Unfortunately, this town is also a big summer show as everything is shut down after August just like Hollywood movie studio sets. very strange.
So, choice is yours, are you active and young at heart? or are you classy and enjoy tranquility? it is like Mango and orange really, not apple and orange ;)
