Mystic, Ct or Newport, RI /////Nantucket or Chatham & Ptown

Hi Everyone:

I was hoping I could get some feedback on a couple of dilemmas I am having. If you had the choice of visiting Mystic or Newport RI which would you choose and why? I have a 1/2 day to spend in either one. The next day we would either go to Nantucket or drive up to Chatham and then Ptown. We would probably stay around Ptown if we did the latter choice or in Hyannis if we opted to go to Nantucket. The following day we would drive up to Boston and hit Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower along the way. Thank you so much for any feedback...everyone is always so helpful.

I personally think there's much more to do in Newport (the Mansions, the port, shopping, the history and architecture). You realy need at least a day in Newport to appreciate it. So with only four hours, you might as well pick the one that would just fill that four hours: Mystic. And it's less out of the way as well.

I agree with Alan in that I think Newport requires more than half a day. You can tour the quaint Mystic Seaport in a few hours and be on your way.

Not far from Mystic you also have the option of the Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun Casinos!

Newport but if you choose Mystic, try to squeeze in Stonnington, Ct.

Newport is awesome and not to be missed. You can always tour 1-2 mansions, see the coast and walk around a little. It's such a special place. Have fun! Maybe we will see you when we are there in November!!

The Marble Mansion is a favorite of mine. From here continue to the water and head to Castle Hill Inn.

I would definitely opt for Newport, RI. You can do the Cliff Walk and have lunch downtown by the marina. Check out the pix here to see why:

(Mystic is fine. The Cliffwalk in Newport is better).

You can then drive to Chatham, explore that area a bit, and take the high speed ferry to Nantucket from Harwich Port (the village adjacent to S. Chatham).

It seems like a sure bet that n8vca has already had a visit to coastal New England since this post is over 4 years old! In any event, for anyone with the same interests, you might keep in mind that the Hy-Line fast ferry and Steamship Authority fast ferry, both out of Hyannis give you more options for getting to Nantucket. We like to go and return on our own schedule, not based on the set times that are required in Harwich (A mandatory 8 hours on Nantucket). Also, if you plan to go off season, keep in mind that the Harwich ferry stops October 4. During the busy summer months, some folks feel that the Harwich docks are easier to access (especially from Chatham or Dennis), but we have never run into problems in Hyannis. Actually, from the outer Cape, Hyannis and Harwich are both about a 30 minute drive so the Hyannis ferry is our best choice.

Yellow bird.

Looks to me like the post was created Sept 2008. I think you were looking at the date n8vca joined tripadvisor.

hmmm. this post originated on Sept. 28, 2008, less than a month ago.

Take the Harwich ferry, the whole ordeal is so much easier: parking, seating, scheduling, more time on Nantucket, small local guy running the ferry, etc. etc.
