Provincetown in late September

Hi,

We are travelling around the region during the last week of September and thought we might stay in Provincetown for three nights. Is there enough to do there and will everything still be open between 21 and 24 September? We enjoying cycling and walking but are not sure what the weather will be like at that time of year.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

Generally a great time of year weather-wise and most places will be open.

The fall is my favorite time to go to Provincetown. Man of the shops are running great sales. The weather is perfect and everything is open through columbus day weekend. The town is much more relaxed in the fall and doesn't have the craziness that the summer usually has.

The restaurants that are open year-round will be open but others are hit or miss. This is when I go to Provincetown now and finding a place to eat canbe a challenge (see my recent review of Burger Queen). El Mundo was already closed last year by September 24 and Edwige at Night just closed for dinner that evening. Landmark was open depending on the weather and traffic on Commercial Street. The shops are generally open but they are not open as late in the evening as during the summer except on weekends.

The shows at the clubs have generally closed by then so if you want to see Miss Richfield, etc. you will be out of luck.

Weather is generally good, cooler of course. Good weather for biking or hiking.

Weather in late September can be quite variable. It could be pleasant and somewhat warm or it could be chilly (but not truly cold). Wind and/or rain is always a possibility.

Provincetown will be more low key but not dead. Weekends will be more lively than weekdays. Maybe 3 nights could be one night too long unless you want a very relaxing time.

That time of year, you should have no trouble getting last-minute accommodation if you want to wait and make your decision based on the weather forecast.

September can often be the best weather month of the year. As someone suggested below, you may want to wait to see the weather report and then book. I think 3 nights would be fine. You could rent bicycles one day, walk the town the 2nd day (and donate to the local economy) and walk the beaches on the 3rd day. The shops are interesting and the national seashore is a treasure. And for accomodations, there are many interesting, very comfortable B&Bs. Have fun.

You've picked the most ideal time to go. Weather and temperature are usually good. Almost everything's still open. The hordes of July & August tourists have waned, but still enough people remain to make it interesting.
