Driving Trip Through Central Ma.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Massachusetts this May and would like some advise and recommendations on places to stay, eat and visit. We are in our 70's and in good health. We like to see and visit older and historic areas of cities and interesting and unique small towns.

We plan to arrive in the Berkshires about the first of May and stay around a week or so. From there we plan to take the northern route to the Pioneer Valley and stay there for another week or so.

From there we plan to go to the central area and Sturbridge area, from there to Cape Cod for another week and finally to Boston. We will be staying north of Boston in Danvers and plan to take the train into Boston and tour Cape May.

I have already sent for and received information from all of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureaus. What I am looking for are special places that may not advertise in those type of magazines.

Sturbridge is a great town. Be sure to carve out at least half a day to spend at Old Sturbridge Villiage. www.osv.org It is well worth it. Although many may try to stear you clear of Springfield, the Quadrangle museums are neat. http://www.springfieldmuseums.org/ Worcester also has some hidden gems like the Armory http://www.higgins.org/

There are plenty of quaint small towns to check out. North west of Sturbrige are the towns of West Brookfield and Brookfield that give you a nice classic New England feel. Have a meal at the Salem Cross for a classic New England Inn http://www.salemcrossinn.com/ If you like nature, be sure to check out the Mass Auduboun Society. They have many locations across the state and will offer you great leasurly hikes through our beutiful preservations http://www.massaudubon.org/ They often run clinics that would give you up close and personal insight on our ecology.

You said you're heading north from the Berkshires. If so, be sure to check out the Yankee Candle factory in South Deerfield.

If you're in the Sturbridge area around May 13-18, be sure to check out the Brimfield Flea Market. It's huge-- miles and miles long. If you like antiques, you'll enjoy it.

If you go to Yankee Candle be sure to stop at the Butterfly Museum and Old Deerfield Village. A drive over the Mohawk Trail to Williamstown is beautiful and the Sterling Clark Museum there is worth the drive.
